Movie online spiral farm full. 25F/California I apologize for my long rambling, but I have never been able to format my feelings and get them off my chest before. I hope this is the right subreddit for my concerns. I have been dealing with a variety of ups and downs with my mental health my entire life, but this past year I've mostly been down. I've always been in a state of anxiety and worry, and nowadays I feel like I don't have a grip on reality or who I am as a person, and can't seem to make sense of wtf is going in my brain and identify what I'm experiencing. I'm bored most of the time. And can't seem to do anything about it. I get little enjoyment from my usual hobbies like video games and art lately, and when I DO feel like starting them up, I can't seem to complete anything and retain my focus. I go through a cycle of interests, restart the same games over and over (I've created a new farm in SD Valley possibly 10 times in the past year) pick up new hobbies with vigor then dump them a week later once they no longer have a "new" feeling. Lately, I've been self-medicating with weed to just get some enjoyment from food or to be able to have fun while watching a movie. I cannot play games longer than 30 minutes unless my SO gives me their ADHD meds. I have very poor interpersonal relationships and no support group. I have a very close relationship with my SO of 5 years, but he also has been dealing with major depressive disorder, anxiety, adhd, and has a possible diagnosis of ASD for most of our relationship, and so isn't the greatest at emotional support. Despite this, I have zero desire for any extra friendship or companionship. I like being alone. I do like people, but just like my hobbies, any relationships I make begin to bore me easily as well. I also think I have some type of sensory issues, being present in class and focusing on learning the subject matter has been incredibly distressing, I get easily distracted and lose my train of thought when anyone coughs/makes a comment/I smell something different/loud noises/laughter/etc. I always feel completely over-loaded by stimuli when I'm not in my "safe" environment (home or in a massage session. Most of the downward spiral seems to have begun when I went through a lifestyle change from working in food service/management for 4 years to attending massage therapy school. I was miserable at my old job, but in a different way. While I still struggled with the boredom/lack of interest in hobbies, anxiety, and depressive-like ups and downs in mood, I still found enjoyment in social activities, and didn't have so many issues with self-esteem and feeling "lost" with my identity. I was mostly just stressed and mentally exhausted all the time, but was pushing through. Now, I can't seem to handle even sitting in a class for 4 hours most days without wanting to run out the door. I have never seen a therapist/psychologist. I'm awful at being emotionally vulnerable, and so have never fully talked about these issues with anyone. Now I'm wondering, where do I start tackling this? I don't know if I should start seeing a therapist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, what? I don't know if I want a diagnosis, or if I just need to let this shit out to make better sense of what's going on in my head and help me to ground myself in reality. I am afraid. I am okay with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety or even ASD. But what if I'm bi-polar or have borderline personality disorder or a dissociative disorder or am just a straight narcissist... What if I can't open up properly and explain my feelings concisely. Would online counseling be better to start with? What if I can't afford my appointments... My biggest fear is that there's nothing wrong with me. That I'm just "going through stuff. I know rationally that the help I seek will most likely not make me feel invalidated, but my anxiety is making it so hard to even make a first step. Getting myself to write this out was difficult enough. Please help me reddit with understanding what is happening to me, and where I should start first to get help... Thank you.

Movie online spiral farm games. B: where should we find him if he's always moving. I apologize in advance for the very long story, and my heartfelt thanks in advance for those who take the time to read it. I am a long time lurker but this is my first time posting more than a few sentences to Reddit so my apologies for any formatting mistakes. TLDR: LDR BF had two opportunities in as many years to move in with me, both times he got cold feet. Now we can't be together for at least another year, coupled with lingering intimacy issues that have left me angry and bitter. How do I move forward, and should I? I met him about three years ago, quite by accident through mutual friends online. We quickly hit it off and began spending more and more time together. I was interested in him from the very start, and it seemed to be reciprocated - in fact, he was the driving force early on in getting us to spend more time together and play games, watch movies, hang out in voice calls, etc. After a few months of extreme interest, things cooled and we drifted apart, much to my disappointment, but then we came back together. He had just gotten out of another relationship and was going through a difficult time in his life, and it was over a year until the "I love yous" finally slipped out and officially started a relationship, and we've been spending as much time as we can together ever since. I was completely smitten with him - his personality, his kindness, the way he can make me laugh about anything, and a million other tiny and big things that make me certain that I would be perfectly happy being together. During our time in a long distance relationship, we have been in a voice call almost continuously - we both work, but anytime we're both at home, we're on a call. When not, we keep in close contact through text. He's halfway across the continent, but we made it work. The rest of this is going to start sounding really negative, so I want to stress this part up front - he is incredibly easy to get along with, we have a perfectly matched sense of humor, we share the same views on just about everything, we share similiar goals in life, and generally we have a great, drama-free relationship. We're the couple that other friends are always jealous of because we seem to work so well together. He has a lot of great points and I don't want to sound like it's all bad, because it's not. There's a lot of good. In fact, a couple Christmases ago, I had written him a letter with 100 of the things about him that I loved. I had to start trimming down the list at the end to fit just 100. He came out and visited me for two weeks last summer. It was our first time meeting in real life at that point. He was just the same as he was during our long distance interactions, and we had a wonderful time together, except for intimacy. He showed little to no signs of being attracted to me or interested in me. I made it very clear before hand that as he was my guest, I was not going to be initiating anything or making any moves on him as I wanted him to be completely comfortable and let him set the pace. I certainly wasn't expecting sex on the first night or at all, even - but what surprised me was the complete lack of any of the usual signs of physical attraction. It felt like having a roommate, not a boyfriend. The most intimate that we were at the time was a brief kiss. Earlier in the day he had beckoned me over to kiss him, but we were with my parents at the time and it would not have been appropriate so I had to turn him down as discreetly as I could. When we were alone again that night, he brought it up jokingly as if it were evidence that I was the one who wasn't interested in any type of intimacy - so I turned and kissed him, which surprised him but he seemed to enjoy it. Other than that, he briefly fell asleep with his head on my chest as we watched a movie together before he retired to his room for the night. Other than holding hands during a walk, that was the full extent of our physical intimacy during a two-week time period. I did my best to give him ample opportunities and make my willingness to reciprocate abundantly clear while not pressuring or coming on too strong - simply making him aware of my interest and giving him the opportunity should he be interested. I was disappointed, but continued on. Prior to his visiting, he seemed incredibly excited about the possibility of moving in with me. Several times a day he would mention that he hopes that everything works out and he'd be able to move in with me that year. I was excited too! While he was here, when I asked him about it near the end of his stay, he had suddenly cooled on the idea, stating that he didn't want to put anything in motion at the time and he wasn't sure yet. A couple weeks after he had returned home, I asked him if he was still interested in moving in. He danced around the question, and finally say said that he wanted to finish his last semester of classes before moving, which is not what he had previously said. He is a part-time student, and we had previously discussed this many times, and he had been the one to suggest that he could simply transfer his credits here - we had made plans to visit the campus while he was visiting, but he did not want to when he was here. It felt like an excuse to delay. During the conversation, I brought up my concerns as gently as I could, specifically the lack of apparent physical attraction. I mentioned that it felt like he isn't ready for a real relationship yet. He didn't correct me. After an uncomfortably long silence, I told him that there wasn't any pressure and not to worry about it, that I would still be here when he was. And so, things continued as they had been for the next few months until earlier this year. He completed his last semester of class (with quite a bit of help from me; I did most of his homework and wrote his paper for him because he was having difficulty working part time while taking the class. But I've been annoyed that he never bothered to pick up his diploma or fill out the paperwork to officially graduate. It makes it feel even more like it was just a cop- out to put off moving. Earlier this year, his dog of 11 years unexpectedly passed away, whom we has incredibly close to. He was devastated. After a few days he began to pull himself together, and it seemed to act as a catalyst - suddenly he had decided that he wanted to move out here this year, and began planning another visit out to make sure he could transfer his work or find alternative work before hand. He planned on visiting for two weeks in June and then moving in September. I've been supportive of his choices at every step along the way - making sure that he never felt pressured, and letting him be the driver of all of his decisions, but offering to assist him in every way that I could, because I would very much like him to be here and live with me. When he got here, it was almost the same as the last time. He spent two weeks stressing over minor details instead of actually getting things in place so that he could move. For example, he spent a day upset thinking that he wouldn't be able to get to work during the winter - which isn't an issue for most here, but after hearing one story of a couple foot snowstorm he was sent into a panic that he wouldn't be able to get to work and they'd immediately fire him. Or on what exact day that he would be able to go to the local Wal-Mart to confirm his transfer. Or concerned that they would yank his transfer at the last minute, despite both of us confirming it multiple times that they couldn't. Or worrying that he wouldn't be able to take care of his mother if he moved - his mother knew about his plans and was actively encouraging him to persue them if he wished, telling him not to worry about her. I tried my best to address each of these as he brought them up, but he either shut down and insisted that it was an insurmountable issue, or found ten more to fill their place. I know that he has anxiety about making big decisions, but it seemed like nothing I did was enough. I currently live with my parents for convenience and to help them with their mini-farm as needed, and we have a wonderful relationship. I live independently in the upper floor. I work from home as programmer and helped them purchase and remodel this house. They have been very supportive of my 'friend' helping pick him up from bus stop / the airport, doing their best to show him around town, taking him out to dinner and cooking homemade meals that he requests, and trying to give him as many opportunities as he can while he was here with us. Initially, they had offered to let him stay here rent-free until he found an apartment if he wanted to move out here. They went out of their way to help him find other, potentially better jobs, drive him to interviews, and were generally as supportive of him as they possibly could be. They did this both times that he came out to visit. They even went so far as to spend quite a bit of time and money to create a guest room for him to stay in, giving up our reading area and turning it into a very comfortable suite, and my mother was seriously considering purchasing a pre-built wooden house to put on the property, insulate, and run electrical to it should he stay with us long term. And BF refused to take advantage of almost any of the opportunities that they provided for him. All he wanted to do was stay in my office and play video games with me. Every single day, I tried to encourage him to go outside and either take advantage of those opportunities, or at least go and do things together like walk around town, go hiking, etc. Out of two weeks, we spent only one day outside walking around town. The rest were spent indoors, minus a couple times my parents asked for our help with yard work or to get groceries. His reason was always that he had already seen enough of the area the last summer he was here. BF has been extremely negative about my parents, saying that they're 'way too intense' and that he doesn't get along with them at all. He was extremely negative about wanting to help around the house - I cooked and cleaned all of our meals, minus twice that he helped with part of the dishes, citing that he was 'on vacation and just wanted to relax. One day, my parents requested that we help with some yard work - he was extremely reluctant to do so and while he was polite about it to their face, he was petulent about it to me in private, upset because he 'just wanted to relax. I told him that this would essentially be his rent if he chose to stay with us, spending a few hours a week assisting with whatever chores had to be done. He didn't seem to take it seriously and complained that it wouldn't be fair to do too much work because he works a physical job. He spent the entire time trying to decide if he actually wanted to move or not - I told him, at every step along the way, that I couldn't make that decision for him and that while I would love more than anything for him to be here with me, he had to make that decision himself. He seemed to flip-flop on whether he was staying or moving on a daily basis. The last day that he was here, he finally decided, for sure, that he wanted to move out here. But by then, he had upset my parents with his continual lack of motivation and lack of desire to do anything other than sit and play video games that they politely amended their original offer for him to stay here with us. Privately, they came to me with their concerns about his lack of motivation, and I couldn't exactly offer much evidence against this. They are only willing to let him stay here for 2-3 months now and if he would be able to afford his own apartment at the end of that period of time, as they were very concerned that we might end up being responsible for him should an unexpected expense or accident come up, or should he lose his job, etc. During this time, there was very little to no intimacy - we briefly kissed a couple of times. Very long story short, I tried everything that I could think of to try to get him interested in any sort of physical intimacy. The most success that I had was getting him to sit and look at porn together. I began to give him a handjob at one point, which he allowed for about thirty seconds before making up an excuse to leave the room. Over the next few days, I very gently tried to do the same again, but he refused my advances. I later asked him directly if he even found me attractive at all - he spent several minutes beating around the question and it sounded to me like he was trying to convince himself in real time of the answer being yes and then working backwards to come up with reasons to justify it. These issues are exacerbated because he has moderate to severe depression. I've known this since very early on and have supported him through it as best as I can, and while I understand that low libido is a common side effect of depression (as well as the prescription antidepressants he was on for some time two years ago) in addition to being out of shape, but it is difficult for me because I have an extremely high libido and I know that he used to be much, much more interested in sex in his prior relationships. Something that still sticks with me is when we were talking about his difficulties with sex and he told me that he had been really, really interested in having sex with an ex, who then told him that 'sex isn't all that great, it's just like masturbation' which he said killed most of his interest in it. He has told me before that physical intimacy isn't important to him, and that what is important to him is knowing that I'm there for him. He said that he would be happy to continue a long distance relationship for as long as it took, saying that he knows people who have done so for ten years or more. I told him that that would not work for me. I am heartbroken that he got cold feet again and that he did the same thing as he did last summer. I talked with him about this after he returned, and he apologized profusely, saying that he was sorry for disappointing me again. He's been making plans to move out here into his own apartment next year, and has been extra-flirty and attentitve, and generally has been trying to put as much effort as he can into the relationship. But I can't shake the feeling that it's too little, too late. He also asked if I wanted to take a break from the relationship. I told him that I didn't know yet, because I don't. I'm torn. He told me before that an ex broke up with him for similar reasons - his ex offered for him to move in with him, he refused, ex was upset and didn't talk to him for a few months, ending the relationship. I don't know if he's serious about his plans for next year. I don't want to go through another year of waiting to be rewarded with two weeks of disappointment. I still care about him and I don't want to encourage him to move if I'm not sure about our relationship. And I hate feeling like I'm not attractive enough for him or not good enough (which feels extra-humiliating for me because I've spent a huge amount of time and effort in eating well and strength training, and the results definitely show. Even if he is completely serious and things will be fantastic from this point onwards, I'm still angry and upset with him about what happened this summer. I feel terrible that I feel this way, since it seems unfair that I'm the one asking him to uproot his life (regardless of the fact that it would be far more beneficial for him to move here than vice versa) and I feel like the stereotypical 'guy who's only interested in sex. But, it's a death by a thousand cuts - there have been so many times over the years that he's done something to disappoint me that I feel like all of the love and attraction that I had at the start has run out, and all of the effort that I invested into the relationship has been like trying to squeeze blood from a stone. I don't know how to move past it because just talking to him on the phone brings those feelings of anger and disappointment back again, and no amount of "I'm sorry"s helps that feeling. And it makes me feel worse because I know that he's trying and I logically shouldn't still be holding it against him. Compounding matters one more time is that I currently have almost all of my financial resources tied up in a new business endeavor, which is also sapping most of my time and energy. I can't assist him financially to move out here sooner, and without my parents' blessing for him to stay with us, he would be just barely scraping by month-to-month. If I talked with my parents frankly about all of this, I could probably convince them to give him a chance, but after all of this I can't bring myself to do it. I feel like I've spent the last few years being his emotional sponge and all-around problem-solver and that he's been giving back the bare minimum to hold my interest. It's probably unfair to say that and almost certainly unintentional on his part, but it's how I feel. I keep circling back to the fact that he's got what he wants once more - an LDR in which I'm his emotional support and in which he doesn't have to make any big changes on his end or be physically intimate. And since he is planning on buying a (n extremely expensive) puppy as soon as he can afford it, I can't help but feel like my needs are taking a back seat. Prior to his most recent visit, I suggested several times that he wait on reserving a puppy until after he'd moved, but he keep assuring me that he'd calculated out all of his expenses and knew he could move in September and did so regardless. So he put 500 down on a 4, 500 puppy right before he left. Considering that that's a month's rent right there, I keep imagining him him choosing the puppy over moving to be with me. I am a huge dog lover and understand his loss and need to fill the hole that his dog's passing has left in his heart, but I feel hurt that his priorities seem to rank me below it. All I can keep thinking about is what I would do if the situations were reversed, and I'm just left with sadness. I would have leapt at every change we gave him. I feel like I've tried as hard as I can to be there for him for anything at all that he's ever needed, but that it simply wasn't enough for him to reciprocate. It hurt having him sit next to me playing games, because he felt farther away from me there than he ever did when he was 2, 000 miles away. I've been depressed and bitter the past two weeks and burying myself in work and outside activities to try to get some space between us so I can figure out what I want to do next. I know that I'm pushing him away, but it's either that or unload all of this onto him again and make him feel like complete shit, which wouldn't accomplish anything but make me feel even worse because I care about him and want him to be happy. How can I resolve my feelings of anger and resentment towards him? Should I continue with the LDR and see what the next summer brings? If I choose not to, how can I possibly let him down without making a completely selfish ass of myself and sending his depression into another downward spiral.
I'm SO proud of Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje! ❤❤❤. Enron Corporation was an American energy, commodities, and services company based in Houston, Texas. It was founded in 1985 as a merger between Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth, both relatively small regional companies. Before its bankruptcy on December 3, 2001, Enron employed approximately 29, 000 staff and was a major electricity, natural gas, communications and pulp and paper company, with claimed revenues of nearly 101 billion during 2000. Fortune named Enron "America's Most Innovative Company" for six consecutive years. At the end of 2001, it was revealed that Enron's reported financial condition was sustained by institutionalized, systematic, and creatively planned accounting fraud, known since as the Enron scandal. Enron has since become a well-known example of willful corporate fraud and corruption. The scandal also brought into question the accounting practices and activities of many corporations in the United States and was a factor in the enactment of the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002. The scandal also affected the greater business world by causing the dissolution of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm, which had been Enron's main auditor for years. Enron filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York in late 2001 and selected Weil, Gotshal & Manges as its bankruptcy counsel. It ended its bankruptcy during November 2004, pursuant to a court-approved plan of reorganization. A new board of directors changed the name of Enron to Enron Creditors Recovery Corp., and emphasized reorganizing and liquidating certain operations and assets of the pre-bankruptcy Enron. On September 7, 2006, Enron sold Prisma Energy International Inc., its last remaining business, to Ashmore Energy International Ltd. The low cost of natural gas and cheap labor supply during the Great Depression helped to fuel the company's early beginnings. The company doubled in size by 1932 and was able to bring the first natural gas to Minnesota. Over the next 50 years, Northern expanded even more as it acquired many energy companies and created new divisions within. It was reorganized in 1979 as the main subsidiary of a holding company, InterNorth, which was a diversified energy and energy-related products company. Although most of the acquisitions conducted were successful, some ended poorly. InterNorth competed with Cooper Industries over a hostile takeover of Crouse-Hinds Company, an electrical products manufacturer. InterNorth was ultimately unsuccessful as Cooper bought out Crouse-Hinds. Cooper and InterNorth feuded over numerous suits during the course of the takeover that were eventually settled after the transaction was completed. The subsidiary Northern Natural Gas operated the largest natural gas pipeline company in North America. By the 1980s, InterNorth became a major force for natural gas production, transmission, and marketing as well as for natural gas liquids, and was an innovator in the plastics industry. In 1983, InterNorth merged with the Belco Petroleum Company, a Fortune 500 oil exploration and development company founded by Arthur Belfer. Houston Natural Gas The Houston Natural Gas (HNG) corporation was initially formed from the Houston Oil Co. in 1925 to provide gas to customers in the Houston market through the building of gas pipelines. Under the leadership of CEO Robert Herring from 1967 to 1981, the company became a large dominant force in the energy industry with a large pipeline network as a result from a prosperous period of growth in the early to mid-1970s. This growth was largely a result of the exploitation of the unregulated Texas natural gas market and the commodity surge in the early 1970s. Toward the end of the 1970s, HNG's luck began to run out with rising gas prices forcing clients to switch to oil. In addition, with the passing of the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978, the Texas market was more difficult to profit from and as a result, HNG's profits fell. After Herring's death in 1981, M. D. Matthews briefly took over as CEO in a 3-year stint with initial success, but ultimately, a big dip in earnings led to his exit. In 1984, Kenneth Lay succeeded Matthews and inherited the troubled, but large diversified energy conglomerate. Merger InterNorth, in its conservative success became a target of corporate takeovers, the most prominent being corporate raider Irwin Jacobs. InterNorth CEO Sam Segnar, in searching for a company to merge with to fend off takeover attempts as a poison pill, discovered HNG. In May 1985, Internorth acquired HNG for 2. 3 billion, 40% higher than the current market price, 9] in order to avoid the corporate takeover attempt. The combined assets of the two companies would create the second largest gas pipeline system at the time in the United States. Internorths north-south pipelines that served Iowa and Minnesota complemented HNGs Florida and California east-west pipelines well. Post-merger rise (1985–1991) The company was initially named "HNG/InterNorth Inc. even though InterNorth was technically the parent. At the outset, Segnar was CEO for a short time, before he was fired by the Board of Directors whereupon Lay was tapped to be the new CEO. Lay moved the headquarters of the new company back to energy capital Houston. The company then set out to find a new name, spent upwards of 100, 000 in focus groups and consulting before "Enteron" was suggested. The name was eventually dismissed over its apparent likening to an intestine and shortened to "Enron. 8] 9] The distinctive logo was one of the final major projects of legendary graphic designer Paul Rand before his 1996 passing. 11] 12] 13] Enron still had some lingering problems left over from its merger, however. The company had to pay Jacobs, who was still a threat, over 350 million and reorganize the company. Lay sold off any parts of the company that he believed didn't belong in the long-term future of Enron. Lay consolidated all the gas pipeline efforts under the Enron Gas Pipeline Operating Company. In addition, the company began to ramp up its electric power and natural gas efforts. In 1988 and 1989, the company began adding power plants and cogeneration units to its portfolio. In 1989, Jeffrey Skilling, then a consultant at McKinsey & Co., came up with the idea to link natural gas to consumers in more ways, effectively turning natural gas into a commodity. Enron adopted the idea and called it the "Gas Bank. The division's success prompted Skilling to join Enron as the head of the Gas Bank in 1991. Another major development inside Enron was the beginning of the company's pivot to overseas that was expanded upon in the 1990s. Starting in 1989, the company received a 56 million loan from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) for a power plant in Argentina. Enron Complex in Downtown Houston. 1991–2000 Over the course of the 1990s, Enron made a few changes to its business plan that greatly improved the perceived profitability of the company. First, Enron invested heavily in overseas assets, specifically energy. Another major shift was the gradual transition of focus from a producer of energy to a company that acted more like an investment firm and sometimes a hedge fund, making profits off the margins of the products it traded. These products were traded through the Gas Bank concept, now called the Enron Finance Corp. headed by Skilling. Operations as a trading firm With the success of the Gas Bank trading natural gas, Skilling looked to expand the horizons of his division, Enron Capital & Trade. Skilling hired Andrew Fastow in 1990 to help with this. Entrance into the retail energy market Starting in 1994 under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, Congress allowed states to deregulate their electricity utilities, allowing them to be opened for competition. California was one such state to do so. Enron, seeing an opportunity with rising prices, was eager to jump into the market. In 1997, Enron acquired Portland General Electric (PGE. Although an Oregon utility, it had potential to begin serving the massive California market since PGE was a regulated utility. The new Enron division, Enron Energy, ramped up its efforts by offering discounts to potential customers in California for switching their electric supplier to Enron from their previous supplier, starting in 1998. Enron Energy also began to sell natural gas to customers in Ohio and wind power in Iowa. However, in 1999, the company ended its retail endeavor, only offering wholesale energy as it was revealed it was spending upwards of 100 million a year. 8] 10] Data management As fiber optic technology progressed in the 1990s, multiple companies, including Enron, attempted to make money by "keeping the continuing network costs low" which was done by owning their own network. In 1997, FTV Communications LLC, a limited liability company formed by Enron subsidiary FirstPoint Communications, Inc., Williams Communications Group, Inc. and Touch America. FTV constructed a 1, 380 mile fiber optic network between Portland and Las Vegas. In 1998, Enron constructed a building in a rundown area of Las Vegas near E Sahara, building right over the "backbone" of fiber optic cables providing service to technology companies nationwide. The location had the ability to send "the entire Library of Congress anywhere in the world within minutes" and could stream "video to the whole state of California. 16] The location was also more protected from natural disasters than areas such as Los Angeles or the East Coast. According to Wall Street Daily, Enron had a secret. it "wanted to trade bandwidth like it traded oil, gas, electricity, etc. It launched a secret plan to build an enormous amount of fiber optic transmission capacity in Las Vegas. it was all part of Enrons plan to essentially own the internet. 17] essentially, Enron sought to have all US internet service providers rely on their Nevada facility to supply bandwidth, which Enron would sell in a fashion similar to other commodities. In January 2000, Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling announced to analysts that they were going to open trading for their own "high-speed fiber-optic networks that form the backbone for Internet traffic. Investors quickly bought Enron stock following the announcement "as they did with most things Internet-related at the time" with stock prices rising from 40 per share in January 2000 to 70 per share in March, peaking at 90 in the summer of 2000. Enron executives obtained windfall gains from the rising stock prices, with a total of 924 million of stocks sold by high-level Enron employees between 2000 and 2001. Head of Enron Broadband Services, Kenneth Rice, sold 1 million shares himself, earning about 70 million in returns. As prices of existing fiber optic cables plummeted due to the vast oversupply of the system, with only 5% of the 40 million miles being active wires, Enron purchased the inactive "dark fibers" expecting to buy them at low cost and then make a profit as the need for more usage by internet providers increased, with Enron expecting to lease its acquired dark fibers in 20 year contracts to providers. However, Enron's accounting would use estimates to determine how much their dark fiber would be worth when "lit" and apply those estimates to their current income, adding exaggerated revenue to their accounts since transactions were not yet made and it was not known if the cables would ever be active. Enron's trading with other energy companies within the broadband market was its attempt to lure large telecommunications companies, such as Verizon Communications, into its broadband scheme to create its own new market. By the second quarter of 2001, Enron Broadband Services was reporting losses. On March 12, 2001, a proposed 20-year deal between Enron and Blockbuster Inc. to stream movies on demand over Enron's connections was cancelled, with Enron shares dropping from 80 per share in mid-February 2001 to below 60 the week after the deal was killed. The branch of the company that Jeffrey Skilling "said would eventually add 40 billion to Enron's stock value" added only about 408 million in revenue for Enron in 2001, with the company's broadband arm closed shortly after its meager second-quarter earnings report in July 2001. Following the bankruptcy of Enron, telecommunications holdings were sold for "pennies on the dollar. 16] In 2002, Rob Roy of Switch Communications purchased Enron's Nevada facility in an auction attended only by Roy. Enron's "fiber plans were so secretive that few people even knew about the auction. The facility was sold for only 930, 000. 17] Following the sale, Switch expanded to control "the biggest data center in the world. 17] Overseas expansion Enron, seeing stability after the merger, began to look overseas for new possible energy opportunities in 1991. Enron's first such opportunity was a natural gas power plant utilizing cogeneration that the company built in Teesside, UK. 9] The power plant was so large it could produce up to 3% of the United Kingdom's electricity demand with a capacity of over 1, 875 megawatts. Seeing the success in England, the company developed and diversified its assets worldwide under the name of Enron International (EI) headed by former HNG executive Rebecca Mark. By 1994, EI's portfolio included assets in The Philippines, Australia, Guatemala, Germany, France, India, Argentina, the Caribbean, China, England, Colombia, Turkey, Bolivia, Brazil, Indonesia, Norway, Poland, and Japan. The division was becoming a large share of earnings for Enron, contributing 25% of earnings in 1996. Mark and EI believed the water industry was the next market to be deregulated by authorities and seeing the potential, searched for ways to enter the market, similar to PGE. In 1998, Enron International acquired Wessex Water for 2. 88 billion. Wessex Water became the core asset of a new company, Azurix, which expanded to other water companies. After Azurix's promising IPO in June 1999, Enron "sucked out over 1 billion in cash while loading it up with debt" according to Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, authors of The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron. 250 Additionally, British water regulators required Wessex to cut its rates by 12% starting in April 2000, and an upgrade was required of the utility's aging infrastructure, estimated at costing over a billion dollars. 255 By the end of 2000 Azurix had an operating profit of less than 100 million and was 2 billion in debt. 257 In August 2000, after Azurix stock took a plunge following its earnings report, 22] 257 Mark resigned from Azurix and Enron. 24] Azurix assets, including Wessex, were eventually sold by Enron. Misleading financial accounts Main article: Enron scandal In 1990, Enron's Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Skilling hired Andrew Fastow, who was well acquainted with the burgeoning deregulated energy market that Skilling wanted to exploit. In 1993, Fastow began establishing numerous limited liability special purpose entities (a common business practice in the energy industry) however, it also allowed Enron to transfer liability so that it would not appear in its accounts, allowing it to maintain a robust and generally increasing stock price and thus keeping its critical investment grade credit ratings. Enron was originally involved in transmitting and distributing electricity and natural gas throughout the United States. The company developed, built, and operated power plants and pipelines while dealing with rules of law and other infrastructures worldwide. Enron owned a large network of natural gas pipelines, which stretched coast to coast and border to border including Northern Natural Gas, Florida Gas Transmission, Transwestern Pipeline company and a partnership in Northern Border Pipeline from Canada. The states of California, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island had already passed power deregulation laws by July 1996, the time of Enron's proposal to acquire Portland General Electric corporation. During 1998, Enron began operations in the water sector, creating the Azurix Corporation, which it part-floated on the New York Stock Exchange during June 1999. Azurix failed to become successful in the water utility market, and one of its major concessions, in Buenos Aires, was a large-scale money-loser. After the relocation to Houston, many analysts[who. criticized the Enron management as being greatly in debt. Enron management pursued aggressive retribution against its critics, setting the pattern for dealing with accountants, lawyers, and the financial media. Enron grew wealthy due largely to marketing, promoting power, and its high stock price. Enron was named "America's Most Innovative Company" by the magazine Fortune for six consecutive years, from 1996 to 2001. It was on the Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" list during 2000, and had offices that were stunning in their opulence. Enron was hailed by many, including labor and the workforce, as an overall great company, praised for its large long-term pensions, benefits for its workers and extremely effective management until the exposure of its corporate fraud. The first analyst to question the company's success story was Daniel Scotto, an energy market expert at BNP Paribas, who issued a note in August 2001 entitled Enron: All stressed up and no place to go, which encouraged investors to sell Enron stocks, although he only changed his recommendation on the stock from "buy" to "neutral. 28] As was later discovered, many of Enron's recorded assets and profits were inflated or even wholly fraudulent and nonexistent. One example of fraudulent records was during 1999 when Enron promised to repay Merrill Lynch & Co. 's investment with interest in order to show a profit on its books. Debts and losses were put into entities formed "offshore" that were not included in the company's financial statements, and other sophisticated and arcane financial transactions between Enron and related companies were used to eliminate unprofitable entities from the company's books. The company's most valuable asset and the largest source of honest income, the 1930s-era Northern Natural Gas company, was eventually purchased by a group of Omaha investors, who relocated its headquarters back to Omaha; it is now a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Energy. NNG was established as collateral for a 2. 5 billion capital infusion by Dynegy Corporation when Dynegy was planning to buy Enron. When Dynegy examined Enron's financial records carefully, they repudiated the deal and dismissed their CEO, Chuck Watson. The new chairman and CEO, the late Daniel Dienstbier, had been president of NNG and an Enron executive at one time and was forced out of Enron by Ken Lay. Dienstbier was an acquaintance of Warren Buffett. NNG continues to be profitable now. [relevant? – discuss] 2001 Accounting scandals Main article: Enron scandal During 2001, after a series of revelations involving irregular accounting procedures bordering on fraud perpetrated throughout the 1990s involving Enron and its accounting company Arthur Andersen, Enron suffered the largest Chapter 11 bankruptcy in history (since surpassed by those of Worldcom during 2002 and Lehman Brothers during 2008. As the scandal progressed, Enron share prices decreased from US 90. 56 during the summer of 2000, to just pennies. Enron had been considered a blue chip stock investment, so this was an unprecedented event in the financial world. Enron's demise occurred after the revelation that much of its profits and revenue were the result of deals with special purpose entities (limited partnerships which it controlled. This meant that many of Enron's debts and the losses that it suffered were not reported in its financial statements. A rescue attempt by a similar, smaller energy company, Dynegy, failed during late November due to concerns about an unexpected restatement of earnings. Enron filed for bankruptcy on December 2, 2001. In addition, the scandal caused the dissolution of Arthur Andersen, which at the time was one of the "Big Five. the world's foremost accounting firms. The company was found guilty of obstruction of justice during 2002 for destroying documents related to the Enron audit. Since the SEC is not allowed to accept audits from convicted felons, Andersen was forced to stop auditing public companies. Although the conviction was dismissed during 2005 by the Supreme Court, the damage to the Andersen name has prevented it from reviving as a viable business even on a limited scale. Enron also withdrew a naming-rights deal with the Houston Astros Major League Baseball club to have its name associated with their new stadium, which was known formerly as Enron Field (now Minute Maid Park. 30] Accounting practices Enron used a variety of deceptive, bewildering, and fraudulent accounting practices and tactics to cover its fraud in reporting Enron's financial information. Special Purpose Entities were created to mask significant liabilities from Enron's financial statements. These entities made Enron seem more profitable than it actually was, and created a dangerous spiral in which, each quarter, corporate officers would have to perform more and more financial deception to create the illusion of billions of dollars in profit while the company was actually losing money. This practice increased their stock price to new levels, at which point the executives began to work on insider information and trade millions of dollars' worth of Enron stock. The executives and insiders at Enron knew about the offshore accounts that were hiding losses for the company; the investors, however, did not. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow directed the team which created the off-books companies, and manipulated the deals to provide himself, his family, and his friends with hundreds of millions of dollars in guaranteed revenue, at the expense of the corporation for which he worked and its stockholders. Arthur Andersen Witnesses During 1999, Enron initiated EnronOnline, an Internet-based trading operation, which was used by virtually every energy company in the United States. Enron president and chief operating officer Jeffrey Skilling began advocating a novel idea: the company didn't really need any "assets. citation needed] By promoting the company's aggressive investment strategy, he helped make Enron the biggest wholesaler of gas and electricity, trading over 27 billion per quarter. The corporation's financial claims, however, had to be accepted at face value. Under Skilling, Enron adopted mark to market accounting, in which anticipated future profits from any deal were tabulated as if currently real. Thus, Enron could record gains from what over time might turn out to be losses, as the company's fiscal health became secondary to manipulating its stock price on Wall Street during the so-called Tech boom. But when a company's success is measured by undocumented financial statements, actual balance sheets are inconvenient. Indeed, Enron's unscrupulous actions were often gambles to keep the deception going and so increase the stock price. An advancing price meant a continued infusion of investor capital on which debt-ridden Enron in large part subsisted (much like a financial "pyramid" or "Ponzi scheme. Attempting to maintain the illusion, Skilling verbally attacked Wall Street Analyst Richard Grubman, 32] who questioned Enron's unusual accounting practice during a recorded conference telephone call. When Grubman complained that Enron was the only company that could not release a balance sheet along with its earnings statements, Skilling replied, Well, thank you very much, we appreciate that. asshole. Though the comment was met with dismay and astonishment by press and public, it became an inside joke among many Enron employees, mocking Grubman for his perceived meddling rather than Skilling's offensiveness. 34] When asked during his trial, Skilling declared that industrial dominance and abuse was a global problem: Oh yes, yes sure, it is. 22] Post-bankruptcy Enron initially planned to retain its three domestic pipeline companies as well as most of its overseas assets. However, before emerging from bankruptcy, Enron sold its domestic pipeline companies as CrossCountry Energy for 2. 45 billion and later sold other assets to Vulcan Capital Management. Enron sold its last business, Prisma Energy, during 2006, leaving Enron asset-less. During early 2007, its name was changed to Enron Creditors Recovery Corporation. Its goal is to repay the old Enron's remaining creditors and end Enron's affairs. Azurix, the former water utility part of the company, remains under Enron ownership, although it is currently asset-less. It is involved in several litigations against the government of Argentina claiming compensation relating to the negligence and corruption of the local governance during its management of the Buenos Aires water concession during 1999, which resulted in substantial amounts of debt (approx. 620 million) and the eventual collapse of the branch. Soon after emerging from bankruptcy during November 2004, Enron's new board of directors sued 11 financial institutions for helping Lay, Fastow, Skilling and others hide Enron's true financial condition. The proceedings were dubbed the "megaclaims litigation. Among the defendants were Royal Bank of Scotland, Deutsche Bank and Citigroup. As of 2008, Enron has settled with all of the institutions, ending with Citigroup. Enron was able to obtain nearly 7. 2 billion to distribute to its creditors as a result of the megaclaims litigation. As of December 2009, some claim and process payments were still being distributed. Enron has been featured since its bankruptcy in popular culture, including in The Simpsons episodes That '90s Show (Homer buys Enron stocks while Marge chooses to keep her own Microsoft stocks) and Special Edna, which features a scene of an Enron-themed amusement park ride. The 2007 film Bee Movie also featured a joke reference to a parody company of Enron called "Honron" a play on the words honey and Enron. The 2017 book Bittersweet Symphony by Rebecca McNutt featured main character Bailey Kane discussing Enron while remarking, in devastation there is opportunity, you know. The 2003 documentary The Corporation (2003 film) made frequent references to Enron post-bankruptcy, calling the company a "bad apple. Insider trading scandal Peak and decline of stock price During August 2000, Enron's stock price attained its greatest value of 90. 56. At this time Enron executives, who possessed inside information on the hidden losses, began to sell their stock. At the same time, the general public and Enron's investors were told to buy the stock. Executives told the investors that the stock would continue to increase until it attained possibly the 130 to 140 range, while secretly unloading their shares. As executives sold their shares, the price began to decrease. Investors were told to continue buying stock or hold steady if they already owned Enron because the stock price would rebound in the near future. Kenneth Lay's strategy for responding to Enron's continuing problems was his demeanor. As he did many times, Lay would issue a statement or make an appearance to calm investors and assure them that Enron was doing well. In February 2001 an article by Bethany McLean appeared in Fortune magazine questioning whether Enron stock was overvalued. By August 15, 2001, Enron's stock price had decreased to 42. Many of the investors still trusted Lay and believed that Enron would rule the market. They continued to buy or retain their stock as the equity value decreased. As October ended, the stock had decreased to 15. Many considered this a great opportunity to buy Enron stock because of what Lay had been telling them in the media. Lay was accused of selling more than 70 million worth of stock at this time, which he used to repay cash advances on lines of credit. He sold another 29 million worth of stock in the open market. Also, Lay's wife, Linda, was accused of selling 500, 000 shares of Enron stock totaling 1. 2 million on November 28, 2001. The money earned from this sale did not go to the family but rather to charitable organizations, which had already received pledges of contributions from the foundation. Records show that Mrs. Lay made the sale order sometime between 10:00 and 10:20 am. News of Enron's problems, including the millions of dollars in losses they hid, became public about 10:30 that morning, and the stock price soon decreased to less than one dollar. Former Enron executive Paula Rieker was charged with criminal insider trading and sentenced to two years probation. Rieker obtained 18, 380 Enron shares for 15. 51 a share. She sold that stock for 49. 77 a share during July 2001, a week before the public was told what she already knew about the 102 million loss. In 2002, after the tumultuous fall of Enron's external auditor, and management consultant, Andersen LLP, former Andersen Director, John M. Cunningham coined the phrase, We have all been Enroned. The fallout resulted in both Lay and Skilling being convicted of conspiracy, fraud, and insider trading. Lay died before sentencing, Skilling got 24 years and 4 months and a 45 million penalty (later reduced. Fastow was sentenced to six years of jail time, and Lou Pai settled out of court for 31. 5 million. California's deregulation and subsequent energy crisis See also: California electricity crisis During October 2000, Daniel Scotto, the most renowned utility analyst on Wall Street, suspended his ratings on all energy companies conducting business in California because of the possibility that the companies would not receive full and adequate compensation for the deferred energy accounts used as the basis for the California Deregulation Plan enacted during the late 1990s. Five months later, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) was forced into bankruptcy. Senator Phil Gramm, husband of Enron Board member Wendy Gramm and also the second largest recipient of campaign contributions from Enron, 48] succeeded in legislating California's energy commodity trading deregulation. Despite warnings from prominent consumer groups which stated that this law would give energy traders too much influence over energy commodity prices, the legislation was passed during December 2000. As the periodical Public Citizen reported, Because of Enron's new, unregulated power auction, the company's 'Wholesale Services' revenues quadrupled—- from 12 billion in the first quarter of 2000 to 48. 4 billion in the first quarter of 2001. 49] After passage of the deregulation law, California had a total of 38 Stage 3 rolling blackouts declared, until federal regulators intervened during June 2001. These blackouts occurred as a result of a poorly designed market system that was manipulated by traders and marketers, as well as poor state management and regulatory oversight. Subsequently, Enron traders were revealed as intentionally encouraging the removal of power from the market during California's energy crisis by encouraging suppliers to shut down plants to perform unnecessary maintenance, as documented in recordings made at the time. 52] These acts contributed to the need for rolling blackouts, which adversely affected many businesses dependent upon a reliable supply of electricity, and inconvenienced a large number of retail customers. This scattered supply increased the price, and Enron traders were thus able to sell power at premium prices, sometimes up to a factor of 20x its normal peak value. Movie online spiral farm video. Imagine if someone says to the animals Uhhhh you cant eat me Im vegetarian Also these are people under masks CANNIBALSSSS The farm where people eat people GASP. 25F/California I apologize for my long rambling, but I have never been able to format my feelings and get them off my chest before. But what if I'm bi-polar or have borderline personality disorder or am just a straight narcissist... Thank you.

The selection includes commissioned portraits, anonymous nudes, imaginary figures, and images of everyday people. Daniel day Lewis, Ethan Hawke Good aktor 👏👏👏. 2018 report 2017 report Despite the solid number, this was a bit of a mixed year. Free/nominal fees for subscription services meant I spent a fair bit of time on games which were not on my backlog (albeit most were on my wishlist, so I can treat them as a preemptive elimination. I also had a few timesinks which I regularly went back to as I found many new games to be unsatisfying. It manages to link stories about music, painting, mathematics and war in a clever and engrossing way. The choices are genuinely impactful and make for tough decisions at times. AER: Memories of Old A short game, but quite relaxing and pretty – especially in the flight sections. I had no interest in the story, but the relatively gentle puzzles and enjoyable flights made it worthwhile. Mad Max Much like Mafia III, this is a 10-hour game elongated into a 30+ hour game by copy-pasting tasks. While in theory most tasks are optional, the slow progress and gating of upgrades essentially requires completion of much of them. This becomes a grind, and the gameplay isnt quite enough to keep it interesting. Quantum Break A mediocre story and a mediocre shooter, yet somehow more than the sum of its parts. Maybe Im just nostalgic for the days of FMV integration in games, but this wound up being quite entertaining. Hitman – season 1 My first and only other Hitman game is Absolution, which apparently was a departure for the series. That leaves me in the position of finding this return to normality for the series as rather jarring. I prefer the linear and tighter nature of Absolution – since I dont care enough to go back and complete them in different ways, it felt like a bit of a thin and shallow experience with a threadbare story. Grim Fandango Remastered Im dreadful at P&C puzzle games, and quickly realised I wasnt going to get far without a guide. As such, I cheated my way through most of it and just played it for the writing. Thankfully, the writing is so good that it was still fun. I wasnt keen on Full Throttle, which I played last year, but this was amusing throughout. The Deadly Tower of Monsters A fun concept – a B-movie spoof – combined with surprisingly forgiving platforming mechanics. Im not a fan of platformers generally, but the frustration-alleviating features and general sense of humour in the game made for a good experience. Overfall Solid roguelike tactical combat, marred by some sloppy writing [I dont think English is the first language of the writers, but at least a spell-check would have helped] a wonky interface [pertinent information like resistances is obscured] and a strangely harsh unlock system. Not a bad game by any means, but could have been better with a bit more care. Rock of Ages 2 Bizarre concept, even more bizarre writing, but entertainingly so. Its surprisingly good-looking and quite fun, but five hours was quite enough for me. Battlefield 1 I havent played a Battlefield game since Vietnam, so this took a bit of adjusting. The campaign is very well presented and offers a nice bit of variety, but its over so fast. I had no interest in multiplayer, so this made for a brief, if fun, experience. Soul Gambler A very brief visual novel, but at least it had distinct story paths. The writing was decent, if a bit awkward. My main gripe was that you had to individually click through each line on subsequent playthroughs, which is something many visual novels these days manage to avoid. Stikbold A rather strange dodgeball game. I didnt find the strangeness nearly as amusing as Rock of Ages 2, but it was a moderately entertaining experience with a bit of variety through the different settings and objectives. Cultist Simulator Im a bit mixed on this. On one hand, it had a surprising amount of content and complexity to it. On the other, it drastically inflated the complexity by veiling basic gameplay aspects. That could mean a lot of wasted time – or worse, inadvertently wrecking a multi-hour playthrough - because it wasnt clear what you should be doing next. Walkthroughs and guides were essential. While theres merit to a game which rewards experimentation and discovery of mechanics, there is a point at which its just too obtuse, and at times the game did go a bit too far in that respect. Ziggurat A quite clever blend of roguelike and FPS. Im not much of a fan of the latter, but the gameplay was fun and the roguelike elements softened the blow of failure. Tyranny I disliked Pillars of Eternity and went into this with some trepidation. Fortunately, it was a more enjoyable and accessible experience. Where Pillars just threw a mindnumbing amount of lore at me, this offered a relatively comprehensible story doled out in appropriate chunks. While it did have some of Pillars mechanical issues, like poor pathfinding in combat, they did not seem nearly as bad (perhaps due to the smaller scale of battles. The base management stuff seemed tacked on, confusing and wholly unnecessary. It was far from my favourite RPG, but solid enough – and didnt overstay its welcome. Orwell: Ignorance is Strength I enjoyed the first Orwell game and initially found this a similarly good experience. The few changes were worthwhile ones, and the story seemed to be building up well. Then it suddenly ended. Surely I done something wrong and met an early endgame? Nope, that was it – a mere few hours of gameplay, with an ending so abrupt that I had no idea it was one until the credits rolled. There are different endings, requiring additional playthroughs, but after that disappointment I wasnt interested in going back to it. Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure This was my first game in the series, and I found it enjoyable. I only had to cheat a few times (which is remarkably good by my standards. and the cheesiness of it was all rather endearing. The sequel is now on my wishlist (though it seems to be a fair way off. Train Valley A decent puzzle/strategy game, which quickly escalates from rather placid to chaotic. The simple concept still requires a fair bit of thought to succeed, and while I bumbled through somewhat, it was fun. Rakuen Beautiful. One of my favourite games, evoking the spirit of To the Moon by dealing with weighty topics in a whimsical manner. Wonderful soundtrack and great design. Dangerous Golf I enjoyed this more than Id expected. Its all a bit messy, as one would expect from a heavily physics-based game, and almost throws in too many variations, but it is fairly satisfying. In some levels its all too easy to get a platinum medal through sheer luck, but in other levels it takes a fair bit of skill and thought to get a good score, which is rather more satisfying. Mutant Year Zero This was frustrating. It has the ingredients for a solid game – great presentation, imaginative world, decent writing and voice acting and the core of a solid tactics game. The problem is that it is structured essentially like a puzzle game. The odds are so intensely stacked against you in a group battle that you must pick off enemies one by one. This makes for a slow and tedious process, especially when combined with the impact of RNG and the unsatisfying ending. Dishonoured 2 I felt a little let down by this. Presentation was good, story was fine, but the powers were mostly unengaging and the combat was frustrating. The combat issues were partly my fault in that I tried a non-lethal run, but while there were a few more non-lethal options, I would have loved an option to just punch someone in the face rather than having to stand around waiting to parry in order to launch a non-lethal attack. Finding Paradise This had a lot to live up to – To the Moon and A Bird Story are among my favourite games – but once again Kan Gao delivered. Touching, funny, surprising and engrossing. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – GotY Edition I went into this with a bit of trepidation, having strongly disliked the first two games in the series. While I am a big fan of the books, the gameplay never clicked with me. This was an improvement to some degree, but I still found the combat in particular frustrating and relatively shallow. I wound up just playing it as a story, and it delivered in that respect – even many of the side quests were more memorable than the main storylines of a lot of other RPGs Ive played. While I certainly wont be joining the “Praise Geraldo” crew, I at least had a better experience than I did with the other games in the series. SteamWorld Dig 2 I loved the first game. This was certainly enjoyable but did not reach quite the same heights; perhaps through lack of ambition if nothing else. Solid enough, but lacking the impact of its predecessor. Batman: Arkham Knight This felt like the weakest of the three main Arkham games (I didnt like Origins much at all, but that is somewhat separate. The combat, setting and presentation were all as interesting as ever, and the story got genuinely interesting towards the end, but the damned car seemed to drag down everything it was involved in. From puzzles to battles, it always felt a bit wonky to me – a particularly sharp contrast to the famously smooth and refined movement and combat the series is known for. Unlike Asylum and City, I didnt complete the Riddler challenges. This was primarily due to the car, which I was thoroughly sick of by the end. Perhaps I was rendered a bit grumpier than usual by that, but I also found the Rocksteady tendency to lead the player by the nose at some points, and then leave things utterly oblique at other times, to be particularly grating. West of Loathing Genuinely funny at times, and I loved the art style, but it did drag on a little. The Flame in the Flood Quite an atmospheric and appealing game. The presentation is gorgeous, albeit marred by irritating pop-in even on a GTX 1080. The gameplay is pretty easy to pick up, and while it can be frustrating in the way that a survival game with randomisation inevitably can be (and why the hell cant I boil water to remove the bugs. the checkpoint system is generous enough to ameliorate this. Monster Prom I am not usually one for VNs, but this is great. Entertaining characters, often hilarious (and oh so wrong) writing and easy enough to play through in 15 minutes (it says the short game is 30 minutes, but it doesn't take me anywhere near that. There is plenty of content, some of which is unlockable, meaning there is substantial replayability. Yakuza 0 The first in the series for me, and quite enjoyable. It was funny at times, though the main plot did cause me to drift off towards the end – I wound up doing crosswords during some of the interminable cutscenes. The combat got a bit repetitive, but it was easy enough to get the hang of. I didnt enjoy it enough to get stuck into the numerous side activities, but the main game was decent enough. Dominique Pamplemousse This is a curious game. It is brief (barely an hour long) and linear. The puzzles are simple. Much of the dialogue is sung, for no apparent reason - and not particularly well. The art style has been described as "claymation noire" there's little er. mation" and it all looks a bit muddy. Writing is fine. I chuckled at a few bits, but it's hardly all that, I quite liked it. It's original and there's heart to it. In a sea of lazy asset flips, generic AAA games with no respect for your time and visionless projects, here's an example of people actually daring to have a go with a unique vision. South Park: The Fractured But Whole Not nearly as well-written as its predecessor, but with significantly better combat. The badge progression system was clumsy, and at one point I was left with a stack of grinding to do. Generally a solid experience, though. Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice Wonderful presentation, with some of the best voice acting Ive heard in games. The gameplay itself was decent. Combat was a little too simple, and puzzles could be frustrating at times, but its really all about the experience. Pizza Express I feel a little silly having spent a lot of money on a gaming rig when I use it to play stuff that looks like something out of the early ‘90s. Nonetheless, this was good fun – amusing story, addictive gameplay and a surprising amount of content. Yokus Island Express Cutely presented and an interesting concept. It can be infuriating at times, requiring a degree of precision which is perhaps best not associated with pinball, and getting around can be a bit confusing. Overall, though, its quite fun. The Darkside Detective A pretty simple point & click adventure (aside from one strangely hard instalment) broken into small episodes to make it easy to get through a portion at a time. Nothing exceptional, but a decent way to spend a few hours. Tales of Berseria A surprisingly engrossing tale. It's frequently funny and features likeable characters. The voice acting is excellent - it's a tour de force for Cristina Valenzuela in particular. That helps mitigate a convoluted combat system. It was still throwing tutorials at me after 15 hours; I wound up ignoring them and button mashing, which seemed to work fine on Normal difficulty anyway. Performance is rock solid. Smooth FPS, fast loading and limited pop-in. I have never played a Tales game before, and may not play another one, but it doesn't take a love for the series to enjoy this game. Perhaps the group best warned to stay away are achievement hunters - some of them seem to take a heck of a lot of work. The Outer Worlds Disappointing. The simplistic combat not only makes that portion of the game dull, but also weakens the RPG aspects since you can pour all your upgrade points into speech skills, making those challenges a breeze. The writing is one-note (everyone is quirky, snarky or both) the choices are binary and rarely provoke thought (indeed, the hardest choice was one of the very first) and the characters aren't particularly interesting - nor are they given much chance to be in their shallow quests. It also performed poorly on a decent rig - though that's to be expected from Obsidian. Agents of Mayhem It' that bad. Sure, it's flawed - repetitive quests, buggy at times and nowhere near the level of Saints Row's writing - but it has an enjoyably distinct set of characters (sadly enough, the character missions were more interesting than those of Outer Worlds) and the combat is enjoyably free-flowing. PixelJunk Nom Nom Galaxy I liked the idea of discovering ingredients and turning them into various products, but it quickly became centred around ever more complex process designs which were of no interest to me. Action Henk A fun runner; gorgeously presented. I sucked at it though! Shantae and the Pirates Curse Presented in an enjoyably light-hearted manner, but it felt like it was dragging on even after four hours. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Ultimate Edition I was quite excited to play this, since it featured three of my favourite actors – Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle and Jason Isaacs. Thats the only reason I managed to last five hours. I hated pretty much everything about it; the shoddy fixed camera, the tedious fighting, the cringeworthy writing… The sad thing is that I bought another two games in the series. Sheltered A solid little survival management game. I didnt enjoy it nearly as much as Zafehouse Diaries or Dead State, mainly because the RNG was a bit too impactful. Its far too common for a game to simply be unwinnable due to a lack of rain and/or the distribution of resources in nearby locations. When things are fairer (or the difficulty is lowered) it becomes quite a grind – with no real winning condition and little in the way of variety (there are a few shallow quests of minimal value or interest) tedium ensues. Civilization VI Quite liked the new mechanics and enjoyed playing as Australia (though Walzing Matilda is so distinctive that it gets a bit grating. Having spent many hours in its predecessors though, there was nothing particularly groundbreaking which compelled me to play more than a few games. Porno Studio Tycoon Ill give pretty much any management game a go! Unfortunately, things werent particularly well explained and while there seemed to be a bit of depth, a lot of it was blocked off (to add to the confusion, the tutorial focused on mechanics which were blocked off for much of the early game. Aarklash: Legacy I normally like tactical games, but this was just too unforgiving and there was no ability to grind to reduce the difficulty. Intergalactic Bubbles Its basically Bubble Bobble, which is fine. Its quite nicely presented. The problem is that each level is meant to be completed in a certain number of moves, but since the bubble colours are randomly generated, its mostly down to luck – you might be able to wipe out half the bubbles on your first move, or might struggle to get any matches at all. Tom Clancys The Division I got fairly close to the end of this game but was just so fed up with it that I couldnt push myself to get through it. The story was forgettable, the shooting mechanics were mediocre, all the extraneous gameplay elements were just an annoyance and I felt the game was balanced against me as a solo player (only twice did I find a co-op partner, and both of them screamed in Korean throughout. It looked impressive, at least. Kingdom: New Lands Edition I really thought Id like this game, and had it on my wishlist from release. I love management games, and have no issue with passive management. It also looked gorgeous; this is one of the best-looking pixel-art games Ive played. Unfortunately, it did not click at all. The AI was not bright, which is inevitably a source of a lot of frustration in a passive management game. Further, the gameplay was just dull. I felt like I was running back and forth endlessly for little reward – pretty though it may have been, I found myself wishing for a button to speed up time. The positive reviews suggest it is a relaxing and chill game – I just found myself frustrated with the AI and bored by the gameplay. Halcyon 6: Lightspeed Edition For some reason I thought this was more of a starbase management sim rather than a tactical space battle sim. The starbase elements are there, but they are pretty thin. Most of the game is about the tactical space battles, which were interesting and varied enough early on, but after nine hours and no end in sight I was sick of them. FIFA 18 I havent played a FIFA game since 98, so it was interesting to give this a go. The story mode was okay – quite well presented, but the player rating system was infuriating at times (the out-of-position penalties in particular. I did find that there was a huge gap in the difficulty settings – one was ludicrously easy (insultingly so; the AI kept missing from close range) but the next was a bit too steep for someone essentially new to the series. An option between the two would have been nice, or at least an easier difficulty which at least tried to mask how easy it was making things! I also tried management mode, but having been used to Football Managers detail I was not able to get into this. Seven: The Days Long Gone This was a frustrating experience. I really liked the concept of an isometric thief RPG, and did my best to give it a fair chance. It had its positive aspects; freedom of movement, decent voice acting and reasonable graphics. However, the freedom of movement also worked against it; confrontations with enemies often spiralled into circular chases suited to Benny Hill music and I lost count of the number of times I plunged to an untimely death through a misstep. Moreover, it didnt really work to its premise. The game started with a tutorial centred around a stealthy heist, which seemed to be the central premise of the game. The next time I encountered a situation close to that was six hours later. Age of Wonders 3 I loved Shadow Magic many years ago but struggled to get into this. Maps seemed to take an inordinately long time to the point that armies were monstrously large and there was no research left. Maybe I was too defensive, but the AI was very passive. The Dweller A decent little puzzle game with minimal assets. Out of the Park Baseball 19 A slight improvement on its predecessor. The main addition was an online card-game mode, but Im not sure that works well in a management game. My squad was rapidly full of high-end talent and I felt no real connection to the team. Niche: A Genetics Survival Game Nice concept, but a rather wobbly execution. The genetics aspect tended to be lost due to the fast paced and tough nature of the game; the focus was so much on just keeping any creature alive that genetics didnt come into my thinking. Apparently the best strategy is to sit on the first island for ages and build up a tribe, but the tutorial didnt make that clear at all. Royal Heroes A grindy and buggy mobile game. Endless Space 2 – Digital Deluxe Edition I thought I was falling out of love with the space 4X genre, having been very disappointed with the last few I placed – particularly Stellaris – but this hit the mark. The alien races are distinct, making for significantly different gameplay. The gameplay itself is always interesting; unlike Stellaris, it doesnt hit a dead patch mid-game. I found the combat a little frustrating – seemingly even contests would often have completely one-sided results for no apparent reason – but aside from that it was a solid game. Monster Slayers An enjoyable little rogue-lite deck builder. While I normally prefer a bit more flexibility in deck building, tying cards to characters meant that each one had a distinctive feel which gave the game plenty of replayability. Dark Train This sounded interesting in concept, but was way too oblique for me. State of Decay 2 This seemed like the perfect game for me – I love survival management and settlement building. Unfortunately, it wound up feeling rather like a shallow MMO – trite dialogue, grindy tasks and no real sense of purpose or direction. I just found myself engaging in long, dull runs between locations, engaging in the same shoddy combat over and over again. The Banner Saga 3 I played the first two games in the series to completion and seem to recall enjoying them, but something about this did not click at all. I had zero interest in the story – the time between instalments has dulled my memory of it – and the gameplay just felt so flat. Im not really sure what changed between playing the last two games and now, but I had no motivation to keep playing. Gremlins, Inc A reasonably enjoyable but forgettable board game. Warhammer 40, 000 – Space Wolf This is a game plagued by odd design choices. It has turn-based combat (which I love) but it is deprived of so much of its strategy by the way it is designed. Enemies appear at arbitrary moments from arbitrary locations (including amid your troops) without warning or logic, meaning that success requires either a degree of fortune or grinding missions to know when and where enemies will appear. Perhaps this is to compensate for the weak AI, which is prone to boneheaded acts, but it just makes things irritating and dull. It also has a card collecting and deck building mechanic (again, which I love. The distribution of cards, however, is bizarre – completing tasks in missions (which can take 30+ minutes each) will give a couple of low-level cards. In contrast, activating one of numerous codes from the forums provides a pile of high-level cards. “Legendary” cards are so readily available in this form that a deck can be filled with them with a few minutes effort. There is a clumsy system for upgrading each card, none of which is explained in the shallow tutorial. There is also an upgrade path for your squadmates – again poorly explained – which is reliant on grinding missions. They don't use your custom decks, so while you're flooded with Elite and Legendary cards for the leader, you have to grind just to eke out a few more Uncommons for the rest of your squad. There's really nothing else to recommend the game. Graphics and sound are serviceable and the story is barely there. It just feels like yet another Warhammer game pushed out for the sake of it. Warhammer 40, 000 – Dawn of War II Another disappointing Warhammer game. Again this had things I liked – a strategic layer with character progression, equippable loot, choice of missions and ebb and flow of the wider battle. However, I found this constrained by the limits placed on that strategy, with constant time pressure funnelling me into the key missions. Im not sure how much that time pressure would have impacted on the outcome – would doing side missions result in overall failure – as it was never properly explained. Moreover, I found the RTS gameplay really quite dull and repetitive, such that I didnt feel compelled to continue. Road Redemption Incredibly dumb – horrible dialogue, clumsy gameplay (trying to aim guns while riding was a nightmare) and buggy (the one round which I won was as a result of a bug which caused me to be invincible for most of it) but it did have some entertainment value. Moonlighter Having spent 125 hours in Recettear, it's fair to say I am very much open to the burgeoning shopkeeper-by-day/dungeon-crawler-by-night genre. Unfortunately, this fell flat. Even after a relatively short period it became a dull grind. Much of that is due to a distinct lack of charm; it looks nice in screenshots, but lacks any real character or presence in game. The absence of any decent writing is another problem; what there was of the story didn't interest me in the slightest. In contrast to a game like Recettear, filled with charm and heart, this was utterly bland. Add in the clumsy storage system, shallow shopkeeping, sluggish combat and irritatingly repetitive music, and seven hours was more than enough for me. Shelter Was rather surprised to dislike this. I found myself getting lost far too easily, which given that it was a very linear game meant a lot of frustration. The visual presentation was grating and confusing. Mainlining Moderately interesting hacking game, but too shallow, linear and not particularly well written. Reassembly Took a while for this to click, but once it did it was decent enough. I could have spent many hours playing this in the ‘90s, but it didnt have enough of interest for me to do so now. 12 Labours of Hercules V: Kids of Hellas Cute enough, I suppose, but quickly became repetitive. Aaero A music-based shooter with poorly explained shooter mechanics and music which was very much not to my taste. One track really stood out as effectively blending the music and game mechanics, but that should have been the standard rather than the exception. Purrfect Date This game is presented as a cutesy, tongue-in-cheek game and for the most part it pulls that off pretty well. If that was the sum of it, I'd be reasonably satisfied. Instead, there is a dark, unpleasant story underneath, with numerous descriptions of animal abuse. It's utterly jarring - a game which is presented as being for cat lovers (not that kind of lover) yet featuring descriptions of them being victims of torture, experimentation and killing. The closest thing to a warning on the store page is a reference to "black humour" which doesn't cover it in my view. There is no humour in these scenes, so its not “black humour”. I dont know what it is, other than a simply bizarre choice. Even putting aside the lack of warning, it's an unpleasant and jarring experience. I'm at a loss as to what on earth the devs were thinking. The writing is otherwise reasonably good. The structure of the game, however, is poor. It requires multiple playthroughs to get a proper ending, and there is no way to quickly skip the text. Prepare for RSI, clicking through page after page of dialogue, if you ever want to get to the ending. Suffice to say, going through this once is quite enough for me. Space Hulk Ascension I normally love turn-based combat, especially with RPG progression, but this was just dull and frustrating. Not having a good year with Warhammer games. Super Daryl Deluxe All very QUIRKY, and constantly at pains to remind you of how QUIRKY it is, without ever being particularly amusing. The art style is at least eyecatching, and some of the music is decent, but the writing didnt grab me at all. The combat was a grindy battle of attrition – the only thing worse than “kill x monster” quests are “collect x items which randomly drop from only a small percentage of monsters after you kill them” quests. Add in the ever-frustrating boss fights where you had to win through repeating an unintuitive set of actions several times, and I didnt feel like going much further. Think of the Children Nice idea, and its good to play a locally-made game, but its dreadfully designed for a single player. Although it can have up to three co-op partners, it doesnt adjust the difficulty in the slightest to cater for a solo player rendering it near-impossible. Legend of Grimrock 2 Obtuse puzzles, clumsy combat and bland design made this quickly unappealing. FIFA 19 I mainly just played for the story mode, which was fine. Didn't notice much of a difference from 18. Out of the Park Baseball 20 No discernible improvement upon its predecessor. Oriental Empires Some nice ideas, but thoroughly dull. In six hours I was attacked three times by bandits and spent the rest of the time painstakingly building farms. Iratus: Lord of the Dead An enjoyable little strategy game. I will probably go back to it since it's in early access and is constantly being rebalanced. Into the Breach Moderately interesting strategy, but not enough to keep me coming back. There Came An Echo Iridium's previous game, Before the Echo (aka Sequence) was a flawed but enjoyable hidden gem. There Came an Echo has a similar level of charm, but two fundamental problems. The first is that it was simply unplayable on my PC. A black screen after loading; no way past it. Apparently it was due to an incompatibility with my microphone which is rather problematic when I don't HAVE a microphone. The second is that (having used my partner's computer to run it) ultimately it's a very raw proof of concept. Like its predecessor it has charm in the voice acting and writing, but unlike its predecessor it is just not a lot of fun to play. Put aside the gimmick of giving voice commands and you're left with a short, clumsy, shallow and frustrating experience. World of Mixed Martial Arts 5 As usual for the series (indeed, the dev in general) a stack of good ideas marred by fundamental flaws. Good as a hypnotic experience between other games. Star Trek Timelines I tried this briefly a few years ago and didn't get into it, but I certainly did this year. It's all pretty shallow, but as a fan-friendly timewaster it's decent enough. Football Manager Touch 2019 Endlessly infuriating, and a bit buggy, but always manages to draw me back in.
The man swung the door open with a frantic shove, barely stopping short of tumbling into the endless void waiting on the other side. "i tHink yOu Will fiNd yOurself hArd preSsed tO loCate a mEans oF eGress, Mr. LoMan, ” crackled a discordant voice, resonating from everywhere at once, and yet nowhere at all. The disembodied antagonist sounded human enough, but meted out syllables with a perturbed, unnatural cadence. The speech sounded foreign yet familiar, as though uttered by an entity whod studied language exhaustively, but hadnt ever attempted to speak aloud until this very moment. The terrified man whom the voice addressed – Mr. Loman, presumably – scanned the empty hotel hallway. He saw only doors and doors and doors, stretching off into infinity on either side of him. A low rumble welled up from under the carpet, rattling the bones beneath his damp, sweaty skin. Mr. Loman ran. He ran for a solid minute before daring to look behind him. Even then, he risked only a quick jerk of the neck over the shoulder, sprinting all the while. The sight that greeted Mr. Loman forced him onward, despite burning lungs and aching knees. The floor was collapsing. Not even collapsing. vanishing. Patterned section by patterned section, the hallway faded from existence, swallowed by a boundless oblivion. “sO muCh timE wasted, seeKing eXternal trutHs, aS thoUgh tHe worldS wiThin oUrselves aRe noT alReady inFinte…” The hallway ended abruptly, concluding with a single locked door. Loman tugged at the knob with an agitated groan. The door did not oblige him. The interminable blackness rapidly devoured the floor beneath his feet, swallowing both Mr. Loman and his screams as he tumbled into the darkness. “wE All conTain multitUdes, mR. LomAn – eVen oNe Such aS yOu…” Saturday, January 19th, 2038 Noelle Kings morning – like most of her better ones – started with a whisky-cut latte and a dead body. She paced the limited quarters of the squalid motel room, looking for anything out of place. Well, anything other than the corpse, obviously. The poor, lifeless bastard lay slumped in a washed-out armchair, chin pulled to his chest, eyes still open, half-closed in death. But aside from the stiff throwing off the rooms feng shui, nothing else seemed amiss: no signs of a struggle, nothing bloodied, nothing broken. That was bad news for Noelle and her partner, Charlie B. A murder investigation could be rolled into several days' worth of expenses for their P. I. firm. Several weeks' worth, even, depending on how creative Charlie got with the accounting. Death by natural causes, however, produced far fewer billable hours. And as it stood, cash proved the only effective means of keeping at bay the particularly ill-intentioned swarm of creditors, bookies and bankers who drifted into the agencys orbit on an almost daily basis. “We sure this is even a crime scene, Charlie? ” asked Noelle, pouring more Seagrams into her cup, further diluting the already nominal coffee-to-not-coffee ratio. “Couldve been a heart attack. Or an overdose. Hell, Ill bet you a years Basic that we find some cheap speed in the nightstand, right next to the Bible. ” “Oh, did you qualify for Basic Income when I wasnt looking? ” quipped Charlie, scanning the room through the Augmented Reality interface embedded in the lenses of his thick-rimmed eyeglasses. “So, were just turning over dirty motel rooms and hanging out with dead dudes for sport, then? ” “Itd be more of a sport than whatever that nerd shit was that you dragged me to last night, ” shrugged Noelle, wrinkling her flat, broad face. She tugged open the nightstand, peering inside. Disappointingly, the empty drawer contained neither drugs nor divinity. “I can't believe people even bet on that stuff. Video games are not a sport. Period. ” “Oh, boy, ” grimaced Charlie “where to even start with that…” He made a grand show of dramatically rolling up the sleeves of his tattered, red hoodie, as if symbolically prepping to do some hard labor. Once the cuffs had been rolled all the way past his lanky forearms and up to his beady elbows, he held up a finger to count off each subsequent point: “One — Rite of Champions if fucking awesome. “Two— Youre just pissed off because my winning bracket wiped every conceivable floor in every conceivable universe with your sad, didn't-guess-a-single-correct-matchup, little shit-show. “And” he droned, dragging out the single syllable word for roughly the length of an actual sentence, “Three — Yes, this is a crime scene. Basically. During housekeeping rounds this morning, the Auto-HK bot declared foul-play and locked down the entire floor. The motel cant legally rent out any second-floor rooms until theres been an investigation, which the cops arent exactly clamoring to start. ” Noelle ran her hand through the longer half of her asymmetrically cut auburn hair, stalling as she attempted to find the words necessary to vocalize her frustration. “Why would the cops not—“ Noelle stopped herself short, having already answered her own question. “Oh, for fucks sake, Charlie! Is he undocumented? ” “Maybe, ” he said, in a tone that clearly meant ‘yes. “Be honest, though – when I VOIPed you this morning, would you have agreed to traipse all the way up to North Omaha at 6 AM on a Saturday to investigate the possible murder of an undocumented John Doe? ” “Maybe” she said, in a tone that clearly meant ‘no. “Look – the cops are sending someone ‘when they can, ” said Charlie briskly, tapping the corner of his glasses to cycle different AR displays. “But if a ‘certified private contractor can rule out foul play in the meantime, then the motel can start booking rooms again and we get a little something for our troubles. ” Noelle grunted noncommittally, and then pressed her index finger against her temple. The subdermal neuro-implant beneath her skin whirred to life, and the iris of her left eye shifted from its natural green to a deep indigo. As her own AR software finished buffering, a familiar analytics grid filled her vision, painting the tiny hotel room with fine indigo lines. Her private military corporation tech was leaps and bounds above Charlies homemade eyeglasses setup. Granted, Charlie had circuited and soldered his gear up himself, mostly by following online tutorials he streamed from The Mirror. Noelles augmentations came courtesy of a different time in her life, a darker period, and now served as a reminder that there were far more morally compromising ways to make a living than as a second-rate detective-for-hire. Noelle started rifling through the corpses pockets. As she did, her implant sketched translucent magenta outlines across a virtual plane, drawing her attention to items of interest. “Guys got no ID chip, no social metrics. Noelle mused. "And there's nothing in this wallet, except a Video Dome punch-card with one punch left 'til a free rental— which just screams fraud. ” She stood up and stretched. Her tall frame eclipsed the lamplight just so, plunging her comparatively diminutive partner into darkness. Noelle managed a half-hearted shrug by way of apology for blocking his light, which he neither accepted nor appreciated. She wandered over to the bed and sat down, eyes flitting back and forth as she skimmed a hulking digital wall of lavender text. “Neuro-scan shows no signs of poisoning, internal bleeding – any ‘silent killers, really. And aside from the obvious ailment of being dead, our friends medical records look clean. Squeaky, even. ” Translation: no leads. “If this was actually murder, we're screwed, Charlie. You swore this would be an in-and-out job, not some true-crime-procedural, cold-case shit. ” “Werent you just moaning that this didnt look like a crime scene? ” scoffed Charlie. “Now you're angry that it might actually be one? ” He continued on with his rant while still sizing up the room, conflating both activities into a singular outpouring of frantic energy, like a noisy rooster pecking for feed. Between his overly animated manner, high-pitched voice and messy tangles of dark hair, Noelle felt that comparison especially apt. “I swear, ‘Elle… The only times youre happy are – “ Noelle held up a hand to cut him off. “Charlie… if you do your annoying finger-listing thing again, Im gonna start breaking them. “Eh, ” he shrugged, “I only had one: when you can find any excuse to be miserable. ” Noelle rolled her eyes and continued searching the body. She found cigarettes – actual cigarettes – in the breast pocket of his hideously striped dress shirt, plus a broken, non-holographic smart phone tucked inside his faded sports coat. This guy was a relic, through and through. “I'm fine working a body, ” said Noelle, after the silence had calmed her nerves some, “but that tends to be a helluva easier if you at least know whose body it is. ” “Look. if we find enough to prove murder, but not enough to solve it, maybe we get a little creative, ” replied Charlie with a malicious smirk. “Doctor up a tox-screen, leave out an empty bottle of bottom-shelf scotch and a few empty pill containers. Nobodys gonna look too closely at the last moments of a literal nobody. Especially if we sharpen Occams razor, yknow? ” “Poetic, ” said Noelle, mostly wondering why shed even gotten out of bed today. “I mean, sure… it sucks for this guy, ” said Charlie, alternating between exploring a rare pang of conscience and actively suppressing it. “But in my 33 years on this planet, I have yet to meet someone with a torched ID chip who wasnt a shitty person. ” “Says the guy who torched his own ID chip, ” she zinged. “Oh, Im sorry, ” he replied with mock indignation. “Was what I just suggested not something a shitty person would do? ” Noelle's AR display piped up before she could. A small violet circle stretched into being, pinging about the back of the corpse's neck. The undulating wavelength display that accompanied the circle indicated the signal her implant had picked up was heavily dampened. "You got something. asked Charlie, reading his partner's face as her eyes narrowed in on the corpse's neckline. "Yeah. it's weak. Heavily obscured with a lot of noise, but there's something transmitting from the back of his neck. Man, I gotta get me some of that ATHENA tech. sighed Charlie. "Maybe I should've spent my 20's murdering kids all across the Third World, too, huh. She ignored him. partly because that was just Charlie's sense of humor, and partly because he wasn't wrong. Noelle reached forward, mentally activating the 300x3 metallic exoskeleton that strained beneath the sleeves of her black duster. The 300x3 added an additional 300 pounds of lift to a person's body strength, for periods of up to 3 hours. thus the name. Charlie kept up with the latest exo advancements, always raving about the features of the 400x7 or the 550x3A. For Noelle's line of work, however, the twelve-year-old tech suited her just fine. Noelle's exo groaned and creaked as she flipped the body around, but her gear always did that when she first fired it up. The violet circle of her AR display kept highlighting the back of the man's neck, but there was nothing there. "Yikes. muttered Charlie, already stepping back half a pace. "Shall I prep for surgery, doctor. Noelle smiled, despite herself. She peeled the black glove off her right hand, revealing the cybernetic hand beneath. Yet another ATHENA gift from the lost decade of her life. She dug her steel thumb into the corpse's flesh, which quickly gave way to the pressure. A splatter of blood coated the wall, but the man in the chair offered no further protest as Noelle pried a small chrome orb from between his vertebrae. "Recognize this. asked Noelle, dropping the quarter-sized ball into the see-through plastic cup Charlie held out to catch it. "Nope. answered Charlie, blue eyes crackling like a blowtorch. "But that's what makes it exciting, right. He reached into the decal-and-patch-laden messenger bag at his feet, fishing out a long coil of white cable. He plugged one end into the orb, and then connected the other to the pico USB port embedded in his glasses. “Nice! ” exclaimed Charlie. “Yeah, this babys running JadeRay OS, which means it must have Kimswift firmware… So, then its gotta be rocking either an L-Worth or L-Fried motherboard, which means its definitely got Abdeir transistors under the hood, and that probably means…” Noelle swallowed the urge to tell her partner to ‘spit it out. That never worked. Ever. “… we can hammer attack the living crap out of it, ” he finished, finally, lightly gasping for air as he did. Charlie made a few twisting gestures in the air, followed by a definitive pointing motion. A bright, red spiral of lights flared to life along the white cable, crawling repeatedly from glasses to orb and orb back to glasses. “Anyway – thisll take a few minutes. ” “Hows it work? ” she asked, killing time. “The hammer attack, or whatever. ” “Short answer – cat GIFs, ” he said with a wink, passively monitoring the status of his digital B & E out of the corner of his other eye. "Billions and billions of cat GIFs. “I assume the long answer is slightly more illuminating? ” “Yeah, I can go into details if you want. we've got the time. Try me. she challenged, actually far more interested than she let on. "Okay. he began, attempting to translate his unbridled enthusiasm into a coherent stream of thought. "So. it's physics, basically? Like, you know how computers only understand 1's and 0's. Binary, yeah. believe it or not, ATHENA did send me to college, Charlie. So you've told me, Elle. Anyway, computers don't actually even understand 1's and 0's. All a computer actually 'gets' is having power versus having no power. So, in order to actually keep track of all those 1's and 0's, computer chips have these little capacitors that store super tiny amounts of electricity. If there's above a certain amount of electricity stored, then that's a ‘1. If there's not, then that's a ‘0. Noelle nodded. She wasn't aware of the finer details in so many words, but she knew her way around a circuit board well enough to conduct basic repairs on her arm and exo. Charlie still handled the more complex stuff. mods, massive firmware refactors, and so on. but Noelle had always valued self-sufficiency. "So. continued Charlie, sucking as much air as his tiny lungs could hold. "Most operating systems have two different modes: admin and user. Admins can do whatever the fuck the want, users can only do what the admin lets them. And the difference between admin mode and user mode is actually just the value of a single capacitor: the mode bit. ” Charlie stopped briefly to check the status of his hack, and then soldiered onward. "So, for a hammer attack, the idea is that you ask the system to perform a crazy number of operations in a really short amount of time. That way, the capacitors keeping track of all the 1's and 0's don't have time to clear themselves between cycles, so that residual electricity keeps building and building and building. And if you hammer a bunch of capacitors close enough to the mode bit. The residual electricity bleeds over and flips it on. answered Noelle, taking advantage of Charlie's pause for breath. "Bingo. said Charlie, complete with unnecessary finger guns. "See, nowadays, most GIFs are actually video-based, to save on space. But way back when, people actually made GIFs by stringing together hundreds of separate images to make these crappy, digital-flipbook-like movies. Which. damn. Talk about inefficient. "So you just flooded this system with several billion old school cat GIFs. asked Noelle, no longer able to hide her amusement. "Just fucking pummeled it into submission. laughed Charlie, as a ding sounded off in his inner ear. "Anyway – lets see what kinda weird porn this dude is into, yeah. “Or find out his name? ” chided Noelle. “Whatevers good for you, really. ” “You know what your problem is? No idea how to mix business and pleasure. ” “Somehow, I think Ill manage. ” Charlie flicked his fingers across a number of phantom screens, suddenly bursting into hysterical laughter. “Holy fucking shit! ” he chortled. “Someone is clearly messing with us, ‘Elle. ” “His porn stash really that vulgar? ” “No, no – porns pretty tame, actually. Its on the Desktop in a folder labeled ‘Stock Portfolio. “Whats got me going is this guys name: Willy Loman. And, hes been exchanging all these messages with someone going by ‘Arthur Miller, who claims to be the chairman of the ‘Union of Traveling Salesmen! They all have to be codenames– did we just stumble onto the lamest black ops mission in history? ” “Didnt take you for a theater fan, ” she sneered. “Please, ” muttered Charlie, flicking the information over to Elles AR display like an invisible frisbee, “Death of a Salesman is, like… the one play everyone has to read in high school. Plus, I just saw this article about a new algorithm for solving the Travelling Salesman Problem. The A. cranking it out was called L0man. With a zero for the ‘O. ” “Think its related? ” she asked offhandedly. “Naw, ” he responded. “Its probably just that one thing, where, uh… yknow – you learn about something obscure, and then you see it referenced the next day? ” “Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon? ” she volunteered, filtering large chunks of data into ethereal folders like a child stacking blocks. “Yeah! Howd you know that? ” “I was just reading about it. ” “I cant tell if youre joking or not, ” he said flatly, packing tech gear back into his messenger bag. He unzipped the front pocket, producing a pill container and an empty vodka bottle that would have only marginally increased in value had it still contained vodka. “Anyway, this is a dead end. I assume were gonna forge this dude a prescription or two, and then go get paid? ” “Yeah, that sounds about right, ” said Noelle, collapsing her AR display with a light clap. “And to answer your other question, some us look up real, honest-to-God information on The Mirror, instead of just streaming porn…” “Im sure you meant to say ‘in addition to, right? ” Noelle and Charlie stepped out into the brisk morning air, their pockets significantly heavier than their consciences. The holographic clock popping off the pillar of a nearby strip mall showed just past eight, but the dirty streets of Omaha were already packed with people, grubby-elbow-to-grubby-elbow. Noelle had grown up here, long before ATHENAs recruiters came knocking. She remembered when there were separate cities along the eastern edge of Nebraska, instead of just the one, unending urban sprawl. Ten million people crammed into a space barely big enough for two or three… Charlie tilted his head in a half-nod toward a line of people winding around the block. The gesture simultaneously served as both an inquiry as to whether Noelle wanted to wait in line for a DLeons breakfast burrito, as well as a blunt assertion that he didnt actually give a shit and was getting one regardless. Noelle gazed blankly at the filthy streets, her eye-line tracing a path from the graffitied sidewalk all the way to the roof of a 64-story apartment building. At the top, a lone Mirror antennae dangled over the edge, the tiny dish somehow expected to provide online access for the tenements thousands and thousands of occupants. She strained her memory, trying to remember how this street had looked when she was young. Back then, when the shit had started dripping into the fan, Noelle was old enough to comprehend the events unfolding around her – just not what they would eventually mean. At the turn of the 21st century, most people lived along the coasts, packed like sardines itching to return to sea. Naturally, then, the Greenland ice sheet melting seemed like the worst disaster of the 2020s. It didnt even melt all the way. Just enough to spike sea levels by a few meters. Still, it drove millions of people inland. That grand migration barely made the news, actually. Of course, Noelles dad kept claiming dark days were on the horizon. But hed despaired enough times about enough counterfeit omens that no one really bought into his proclamations of gloom and doom. But as the saying goes, a broken clock is right twice a day. And Alan T. King had predicted complete and utter calamity at least a dozen times by that point, so pops was due for a win. The majority of the displaced population had purchased their flood insurance through the governments National Flood Insurance Program. Unfortunately, the heavily subsidized NFLIPs dirt cheap premiums didnt even come close to reflecting the true risk of the restless oceans eventually going straight up biblical. When the coastline flooded, too many people made too many claims in too short a time period. The NFIP imploded. Groups with enough capital to hire expensive legal teams generally recouped their losses okay. Everyone else was SOL. "A chain-reaction of nuclear proportions, ” is how the news had eventually referred to the fallout from the floods. Some days, Noelle wondered if an actual nuclear winter wouldve caused less suffering. Desperate to avoid defaulting on an already austere budget following the NFIP meltdown, the 2027 U. S. government got creative with revenue generation opportunities. Worst among these 11th hour Hail Maries was the auctioning of public lands and resources to the highest bidder. The new proposals carved their largest chunks out of the Midwest. The Apostle Islands transformed into luxury vacation condos. Most of the Niobrara River bank got snapped up by a conglomerate of movie studios. And an unnamed munitions manufacturer bought 90% of The Badlands for a song, deducing the already craterous region to be ideal for heavy weapons testing. But, the final nail in the coffin came when a certain, tremendously unpleasant bottled-water company won the bidding war for the Ogalalla Aquifer. To peoples credit, a band of do-gooder conservationists rallied around the auction as a “last stand for the little guys, ” organizing a crowd-funding campaign to field a competing offer. They got crushed by a factor of ten. A portly teenage wearing a digi-weave T-shirt cut in front of Charlie, his clothing's expensive computerized fabric constantly shuffling through ironic slogans. The oblivious line-cutter appeared fully engaged in his AR voice-call, which was 80% jargony bullshit like ‘fundamentally disruptive IPO strategies and ‘reaffirmations of changing revenue streams. But from the way he glanced at Charlie before quickly looking away, one could surmise the self-absorbed asshat was fully aware that the DLeons line actually started way back around the corner. “Eat me – Im gluten-free! ” read the egotistical jerk-offs shirt at this particular moment. Nobody exemplified the new worlds demarcation between haves and have-nots better than bratty tech-wonderkids. Granted, this piece of work probably wasnt from Silicon Valley, but he may as well have been. Back when the coasts flooded, California locals took rapturous delight in the news that “those smug tech pricks with their fancy fuckin offices” had been gobbled up by hungry waves. But their schadenfreude at seeing most of Palo Alto underwater quickly gave way to dismay when those same “smug tech pricks” started winning their settlement lawsuits against the government, and then funneling that money toward buying up the countrys most newly invaluable commodity: land. “Dude! ” shouted Charlie. He smacked the techie shitheel in the back of the head, channeling the particular strain of courage that came from by being best friends with a 6-foot-1, cybernetically enhanced, exoskeleton-rocking former mercenary. “Whats your problem, bruh? ” spat Mr. Startup McBitchTits, of the North Hampton McBitchTits. “My problem? My problem? ” asked Charlie incredulously. “My problem, bruh, is that the rest of us have been patiently waiting to get some of the only ‘real food in a 30-block radius, and you act like you dont have to? ” Noelle smirked. Back when she was a kid, DLeons was about the farthest thing you could get from ‘real food. If anything, this showed just far peoples standards had fallen. Near the end of the governments ‘natural wonders fire sale, farmland also regularly changed hands. See, every middle management executive in the country was cooking up some bat-shit crazy scheme to leverage their new properties. It was only a matter time before some spongy, balding, wacky-tie-wearing-but-only-Fridays nobody suggested utilizing the vast tracks of resplendent nature to monopolize food production. First, though, the competition (i. e. every farm not already corporately owned) needed a little thinning. The buy-out process typically ran a familiar course: Some twenty-three-year-old jackass sporting a seven-thousand-dollar suit (and equally pricey haircut) VTOLed his way down to a small, family-owned farm; hed make a grand show of wealth, with his Patek holo-watch and his fully autonomous android assistant; hed offer to buy the farm for more money than the farmers could possibly scrape together in five generations. The farmers always refused. They had their pride; they didnt need the money; farming was in their blood and in their bloodline; so the VP of East Coast Revenue Dynamics and Bland Yet Shitty Personalities made a counterbid; the farm had several loans outstanding, didnt it. well, loans were debt, you see, and debt could be bought and sold like any other commodity; and the VP of Global Paradigm Planning and Incredibly Boring Stories That Dont Go Anyway had friends at all the right financial institutions; sure, it was technically illegal to purchase a certain block of debt, but his friends knew every loophole; with that in mind, the VP of Human Capital Redistribution and Mentioning His Annual Salary As A Pick-Up Line would just hate for the farmers to leave the table with nothing at all, so wouldnt they please take another look at his offer? The farmers always accepted. The corporations spared no expense fully automating their acreages, replacing the calloused, hardworking hands of the American farmer with pristine, tireless robot claws. Their R & D departments had a literal field day developing designer seeds, each little sprout genetically fine-tuned for high yield rates and low growth time. Of course, this actually lessened crop survivability, but that hardly seemed a pressing concern within the confines of your average climate-controlled, luminescence-monitored, hydroponically irrigated superfarm. That next year, America saw its highest food production rates in history. The good times didnt last. “Look, guy – you use the app Guthry at all? ” wheezed the entitled tech baby. “Thats my company. Youre welcome. You can thank me by not hassling me while Im trying to get some goddamned breakfast. ” “I dont give a fuck if you wrote the JadeRay kernel, buddy! ” The CEO of Guthry opened his mouth to deliver a surely devastating comeback, but never got the chance. Noelle grabbed him by the scruff of the shirt, lifted him several inches off the pavement, and wordlessly deposited him on the far end of the street corner, well outside the generally accepted confines of ‘The Line. The deposed burrito king turned bright red. He stormed off, but muttering about how he “wasnt even hungry, ” and if those “idiots in line used Guthry, theyd know a dust storm was rolling in soon, anyway. ” Noelle had never heard of Guthry – there were almost as many dust storm monitoring apps as there were actual dust storms. But the kid was probably right, nonetheless. Following the hostile corporate takeover of Americas heartland, the soil went to hell. Normally, the government gave out conservation subsidies in exchange for leaving certain plots of land dormant for the year, in order to maintain soil health. But in farm-to-boardroom-table America, the federal government was already in dire straits. Naturally, the meager subsidies they offered failed to impress the corporate bigwigs. Those CEOs had sprung for fully automated food production units and dammit, they were going to farm! The drought of 2029 smacked them right in their big, dumb faces for their hubris. Most scientists agreed the drought couldve been mitigated if the Ogalalla Aquifier had retained healthy water levels. The great irony there, of course, was that the most of the aquifers water was still in the region, just individually bottled and sitting on convenience store shelves… The resulting dust bowl proved catastrophic. In fact, Dust Bowl 2. 0 made its predecessor seem almost quaint by comparison. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s raged for almost the entire decade, displacing roughly 3. 5 million people. Dust Bowl 2. 0, however, spun up at the tail end of the New 30s, and looked to have enough fury to rampage well into the New 40s or 50s. So far, 15 million people had been driven from their homes. That was the way things were now: 483 million Americans eking out some type of life or another, the dust driving them into the cities and the cities grinding them back into dust. The two partners bought their burritos without further incident, stepping outside to enjoy their spoils. Charlie tore back the grease-splattered wax paper, eyeing his prize with the intensity of a stray dog staking out a butcher shop dumpster. He opened his mouth to take a bite and then… stopped. In fact, everything stopped. Cars halted in the middle of intersections. Birds hung in the air, suspended between flaps. Everything and everyone stood frozen in time – mid-step, mid-word, mid-wave. Everything and everyone, but Noelle. “gOod morNing, detecTive, ” called a voice that wafted up from the sewers and skidded down from the heavens concurrently. “miGht i tRouble You foR A momeNt oF Your timE? ” “You seem to have mistaken me for someone you can fuck with, ” muttered Noelle, already unholstering the sidearm hidden beneath her jacket. “aNd yOu seEm tO haVe miStaken Me foR soMeone whO feArs yOu. ” “Go ahead, ” she shouted, whipping out her weapon and scanning the street from sidewalk to rooftop. “Pissing me off is gonna end badly for one of us, and I like my odds. ” “tHat iS hOw This joUrney eNds, yeS – buT tHere Is mucH tO acComplish bEfore tHat Point. ” “cOme, noElle – iVe suCh woNders tO sHow yoU…”.
