Minnesota Wild 2015-2016 Season Review The Minnesota Wild '15- 16 season will be remembered as yet another season in a seemingly never-ending series of inconsistent performance. The roster looked, at times, to be one of the most dangerous in all of hockey. At other times, Minnesota looked to be nothing more than a team filled with underachieving stars, burned-out veterans, project-type youth, and washed-up borderline AHL players. The season saw the firing of long-term head coach Mike Yeo after another run of disastrous mid-season form. It was the first time in Minnesota Wild history that saw a coach leave during the season. Minnesota backed into the playoffs amidst possibly the worst run of from in the history of the NHL, yet it was the same team that preformed well enough during stretches of the regular season to put them in a position to collapse so completely and still make the playoffs. It was Minnesota's forth consecutive season of post-season play, and the fan base was insanely realistic in their expectations going in against a top-seeded Dallas club without their regular season goal leader Zach Parise and their creative genius Thomas Vanek. Yet somehow, in true Minnesota fashion, the Wild outperformed every prediction in pushing the series to six games, and Minnesota was able to make the top-seeded team look markedly mortal, and played well enough to have both fans and the team wondering what could have been if it wasn't for some of the most fluky goals in hockey history or if their lineup wasn't reduced by injuries. Minnesota's season as a whole is challenging to sum up, as expectations for the development of youth players looked to bode well for a team with a strong nucleus of veteran talent heading into the season. That level of expectation was just barely met early on, but then crushed so dramatically that it removed any hopes for the club to salvage anything from the season. With a new coach behind the bench, Minnesota again played well enough to make people wonder if this team could get to the yet again collapsed so badly in the final push it took another team leaving all 12 points on the table in the last 6 games for Minnesota to back into the playoffs. With no faith or logical reason for anyone to expect a series win, Minnesota pushed Dallas to the limit at times. The Wild went out and played their best hockey of the season for parts of each game, only to come up short when the team was hindered not by a Dallas side being dominant, but by shooting themselves in their own foot. Actually, it is easy to sum up the '15- 16 season perfectly: In spurts, Minnesota was both the best and worst team in the NHL, and they were both by their own making. With the only constant for the Wild being their inconsistency, Minnesota proved that no matter how well a team played 20 minutes of hockey every night, not preforming for 40 minutes of a game is going to catch up to everyone in the end. Expectations from some fans and media of a very respectable 2nd or 3rd place in the Central Division didn't appear to be without merit. Minnesota came out on fire, taking the division by storm, nabbing 15 out of the first 20 possible points. Goals were coming from a bevy of players, with the 4th line contributing points in almost equal numbers to the top line. The defense, while giving up goals, was able to keep the ship afloat. Dubnyk, however, was another story. His historic run of form ended at the end of last season, and from the first game, a massive come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Colorado, Dubnyk had looked shaky. His mental edge seemed to disappear, and his save percentage was found hovering near. 900% at different points through the first 36 games. Minnesota lost Zach Parise during this stretch, getting injured on November 5th against Nashville. Even without their ace scorer, the Wild soldiered on, with players like Vanek and Coyle stepping up to carry the team to a 4-3-1 record without him. But Parise's absence highlighted problems that were to plague the Wild for the remainder of the season - a lack of a consistent scoring threat, the uninspired shooting of veteran Jason Pominville and Mikael Granlund, the lack of period-to-period consistency, and the unwillingness of Head Coach Mike Yeo to make fundamental changes to the line pairings. By the time Zach Parise jumped back into the lineup, the Wild were to go 9-4-3 through the end of the December, giving Minnesota a 20-10-6 record, putting them in 3rd place in the Central Division with 3 to 4 games in hand on Dallas and Nashville. But something didn't feel right. Nothing did. No one felt comfortable. January hit, and the annual Wild slump decided to show up – pissed off, piss drunk, uninvited, and yet eerily predictable. Part Two: “Things Have Changed” Games 37 through 55 3-12-4 record 1C Mikael Grandlund: 2 goals, 5 assists, 0. 368 PPG, 12. If the first 36 games of the season were the heady, emotionally blissful and idyllic beginnings of a new relationship, January came into Minnesota's season like an “I missed my period” conversation and left like a drunk that decided that “last call” doesn't apply to them. Just four weeks removed from New Year's Day, the Wild were left with a dismal 3-7-3 record – but even that wasn't enough for the hockey gods evidently. They collectively decided that if Minnesota thought January was bad, just wait until they see what awaited in February. Reeling like a man being randomly assaulted in a Seminary, the Wild dropped 6 straight games without a win rolling into February 14th. Minnesota just couldn't get enough of the emotional backhand to the face, apparently. As great as the record implied the Wild were the first two and a half months of the season, the record of the next six weeks would decimate that perception and leave Minnesota in ashes. Yeo tried switching things up – shifting line pairings and finally benching Vanek due to his absent play. Even Pominville got dropped off of the first line. Yeo tried some things, but it seemed a case of “too little, too late” for every decision he made. Those little issues that existed from day one – such as the lack of consistency, the soft goal that Dubnyk was giving up two out of three games, the stale line pairings. continued to surface. Only now, the Wild couldn't cover up the issues with narrow wins and random 4th line heroes. The Wild couldn't bother to even show up two out of every three periods most nights. Fans and media were calling for all sorts of things: for Yeo's head, for GM Chuck Fletcher's head, for Koivu's “C”, even calling for the heads of the sacred veterans: Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. Things really had changed in Minnesota – and everyone knew it. The writing was on the wall: fans were actively booing, the players were barely active, and the GM was having to praise his coach to the media – all sure signs that things were not going well in the Minnesota locker room. Valentine's Day is an absolute bitch, and the Wild decided that if it's a dumpster fire that they were having, why not pour some gas on it? On February 14th, GM Chuck Fletcher decided enough was enough, and parted ways with Mike Yeo, the head coach for the past five seasons. Shifting out a coach that clearly and obviously knew how to coach was perhaps the biggest gamble of GM Fletcher's career. If the replacement comes in and preforms worse, it doesn't bode well for the GM's job security. There were people saying that the team quit on Mike Yeo, that the leadership of the team quit on the locker room and each other, and that the season was a lost cause. While all of it was speculation, it bares repeating that when everyone in a room can logically and reasonably make a case that the team did quit on Yeo, it was, and still remains to be, much harder to make the case that the team didn't quit on him. Minnesota picked a new sweetheart on Valentine's Day, as John Torchetti came up from the Wild's AHL affiliate in Iowa to take over the sinking ship that was the Wild's season: 6 points out of the playoff race with 4 games in hand – a serious reversal from where they were just 19 games ago. Part Three: “All Things Must Pass” Games 56 through 77 15-6-1 G Devan Dubnyk: 1. 94 GAA. 928 Save% 14-3-1 record Interim Head Coach John Torchetti came in and immediately started not just saying the right things, but actually doing them. Gone were the days of players getting comfortable rides. Coach Torchetti said from his first day what he expected – playing the game the right way, playing both sides of the ice, and playing with fire. Torchetti was not just paying lip service – he kept his word. Long benchings for players like Thomas Vanek and Jason Zucker followed immediately after poor performances. Torchetti rewarded effort, giving increased minutes to lines and players that looked to impress. Players like Haula, Carter, Granlund and Niederreiter were rewarded with more minutes and more offensive-zone faceoffs. Dubnyk became the man-beast of last season under Torchetti - and the team played well in front of him. Spurgeon took four blocked shots in a single shift. Finding the right time to get hot, the Wild played some serious defense in front of him, and the Team started getting wins due to Dubnyk's quality run of form. Hell, even the powerplay looked vaguely dangerous. While it appeared that several players bought into Torchetti's idea of the two-way game, not everyone did. While the Wild were winning, they were still streaky: 4 wins, followed by 3 losses, followed by 4 wins. Consistency was the issue that kept rearing its head. If anything, the Wild were and are consistent in being inconsistent. There were no worries, however – with five games remaining, Minnesota controlled their own destiny 5 points up over Colorado for the final playoff spot. But remember, this is the team may have quit on Mike Yeo, and they, from an outside perspective, may have been about to do the same thing to John Torchetti. Part Four: “Nothing But Sunshine” Games 78 through 82 0-5-0 RW Nino Niederreiter: 0. 000 PPG, 14:45 ATOI, 1. 4 Hits Per Game There's a certain “je ne sais quoi” about a team - just six weeks removed from being 6 points out of the playoff race and the firing of its long-time head coach - that is able to leave 10 points on the table during a playoff push and still make the playoffs. It's the way the Wild go about things – from just never allowing anything to be comfortable, to ending up in situations that statistically they never should have ended up in – Minnesota does things differently. It's never knowing what it actually is about a team that has some seriously glaring issues and gaps on it's roster. Minnesota is a team that lost their last five games of the regular season and gets into the playoffs. Of course they did - that's the most "Minnesota Wild" option: find the most seemingly improbable way of doing something, and proceed to tell professional statisticians to kindly fuck off. This season is exactly what to expect from Minnesota – streaky, inconsistent, and motivated by both pride and shame in equal measure. It is inherently no different than last year in many regards. Now, granted, Minnesota ended the regular season on a low note - but their story isn't done. No one expects Minnesota to win their first series against Dallas. But success isn't necessarily beating a team that's better – it's about getting everyone on the same page, and showing what the team is capable of when it plays a full 60 minutes each game and works the system. While that type of success may not result in a series victory for Minnesota, that type of success in the playoffs will go a long way to gloss over this roster's perceived shortcomings. Failure, on the other hand, might force GM Fletcher to take a hard, long look at the current roster and figure out what deserves to be kept, and what pieces are not are part of the puzzle going forward. On the positive side of the last five games: it's nice to know that even if Minnesota can drop 10 points in 5 games, they can count on Colorado to drop 12 points in 6 games. It's not a Minnesota playoff season if it can't somehow piss off Avs fans in the process. If 5 games can prove anything at all, it can clearly highlight the exact level of desire and passion of players. Many players came out with no jump, sluggish, and lacked focus. For a team with many youngsters, energy should always be there – and focus is vitally important (see: Dumba and Suter's performance) for players. Given the literal collapses that occurred under both Mike Yeo and John Torchetti, it appears that Chuck Fletcher bares the most responsibility for the makeup of this team. It was his players, his coaches, his responsibility. For all intents, Minnesota's 2015-2016 season is the cross that Chuck Fletcher must bare moving forward. And without changes for next season that lead to improvement, coupled with a fanbase that is not happy with the current state of affairs, that cross he's carrying might be used in its' historical context. Looking Forward By Looking Back: Areas of Concern for the 2016- 17 Minnesota Wild Minnesota carried many of the same problems from the '14- 15, over into this season: inconsistency, leadership issues and a stagnant powerplay chief among them. Along the way this season, Minnesota added a new wrinkle in having one of the worst Penalty Killing percentages in the NHL - only to be blessed by having the least number of penalties issued against them. To be fair, the powerplay did improve throughout the season to finish a middle-of-the-road 15th in the league. But begin a middle-of-the-road team is the problem, for a roster with the supposed talent, and the core of young, supposedly developing talent, Minnesota was supposed to be poised to have a breakout year. Instead, a first-round exit is coupled with a mid-round draft slot for the off-season. GM Chuck Fletcher has some areas to address, and there's doubts in almost every area on the roster, with little wiggle room against the salary cap. Special Teams At times, Minnesota's powerplay looked abysmal - lethargic, uncommitted to pressing the attack, and players unwilling to shoot from any space. When it did start to pick up, it was due to an increased front-of-net presence and getting bodies to the front of the net. For most of the season, however, it relied too heavily on setting up deflections. With Suter captaining the powerplay from the back, other players were not getting into position to effectively utilize deflections, much less rebound chances. The powerplay needs a complete overhaul, and putting a new system in place that utilizes both early puck movement and players crashing the net. The Wild penalty kill, which has been historically one of the best aspects of their game, suffered huge setbacks this season, as teams routinely played a physical game out in front of goal and exploited Minnesota's lack of physical size. Minnesota, relying on speed, could not effectively move bodies from the front, and when smaller players such as Spurgeon or Brodin committed to moving the bodies, snipers were able to exploit the low slot as ice opened up in front of them. Frequently, players like Suter refused to commit to the body, and found themselves ineffective and out of position. In order to improve, Minnesota needs to find players able to hold space with their body as well as reduce looks from the wide slot areas. Overtime, 3-on-3, 4-on-4 Situations Minnesota's system required players with speed and intelligence on both ends of the ice, but unfortunately their reliance on speed proved costly, as teams constantly caught the Wild out of position and exploited Minnesota's lack of hockey intelligence both in cycling defensive responsibility and in line changes. Minnesota coaches failed to know when to issue line changes, and many points were dropped this season due to line changes on the fly. Minnesota was much too dependent on veteran slower players, with the likes of Vanek, Suter and Pominville seeing far too much ice time in what essentially is a series of suicide drills. That ice time came at the expense of players like Haula, Granlund, Coyle and Spurgeon, players better suited to the high-paced intensity of the open ice game. Both players and coaches are to blame here, and hopefully GM Chuck Fletcher looks to address this issue with his coaching staff in the '16- 17 season. Coaching The worst kept secret in Minnesota is their need for strong, effective leadership. That starts from the boss, and GM Chuck Fletcher needs to realize that after multiple years of Mike Yeo failing to motivate his team, then reversing course and bringing in John Torchetti - only to see the exact same issues - that the Minnesota locker room needs a dominating presence who can impose their will onto this team. Many of the Wild's surface issues in '15- 16 were on the coaching staff, from the OT issues to special teams. There is serious room for improvement in the tactical approach and to man-management in both ever, GM Fletcher must also accept that the tactics that Yeo employed were correct in 5-on-5 situations, and that it is doubtful that any coach in the league would have gotten more of this Minnesota roster based solely on tactics. The improvement must come developing consistent play for all three periods and throughout the whole season. Many people are speculating about John Torchetti's future in Minnesota, and rightfully so with the "Interim" label stuck to his job title since taking over. While Torchetti is a good coach, and can be a successful head coach in the NHL, he is not the candidate to reverse the course of this team in it's current form. In order for John Torchetti to gain control of the locker room, too many veteran players with non-movement clauses would need to be moved out. Since it's doubtful that those moves would happen, a Torchetti-led team in '16- 17 may not have enough change in mentality to effectively lift this team out of it's streaky tendencies. Without much needing to be added, Andrew Brunette needs to be relieved of his responsibilities on special teams, if not removed from his position entirely. Goalie coach Bob Mason also has reasons to be a bit nervous after being unable to cure Darcy Kuemper's mental yips for a second straight season and well as the degradation of positional awareness on Devan Dubnyk's part for a majority of the season. Offense On a team that was supposedly stocked with 9 players pegged for the top two lines, the wheels came off in a big way this season. Mikael Granlund proved once and for all that he is not the 1C of the future, and perhaps isn't even best suited to being a center after seeing his performances from the wings during the playoffs. Thomas Vanek also fell back a few notches in quality. lacking hustle, focus, and perhaps even passion during long stretches of the season. Pominville was the most snake-bitten player in the history of first line wingers, only to be moved down to a line with Nino and Haula, and finally find a pairing where he was able to contribute. Nino Neiderreiter's development stagnated the first half of the season until the second half of the season, where his unique blend of size, speed, creativity and grit proved effective alongside Haula and Pominville. Charlie Coyle had a brilliant first half of the season, only to fade out hard during the second half of the season, almost disappearing over the final 30 games of the season. Speaking of flaming out, Jason Zucker had a rough season, unable to find his shot, and unable to find his way into effective defensive play. Zucker, once considered a possible "30 goals a season" player of the future for Minnesota may not find his way back into being resigned in the off-season. Even Zach Parise proved to be as streaky as the Wild, nabbing 3 separate hat tricks this season, then getting only 19 goals over the 67 other games he played. The late play of Erik Haula was a lone bright spot on an offense that looked decidedly worse this season as compared to years previous. While the tactics called for effective attacking play based off of quick transitions and taking advantage of defensive and neutral-zone turnovers, it was rarely executed well by the players, even though both Yeo and Torchetti's approach appear to have been suited to the roster's individual strengths. Defense Ryan Suter had the most productive season numbers-wise for a defenseman in Minnesota history. His ice time numbers were through the roof for a forth straight season and ate a ton of minutes when players like Dumba and Scandella were under-performing and players like Spurgeon and Brodin were absent with injuries. Yet, for all of this, Suter took a ton of the criticism for the woes on the powerplay, the penalty kill, and the 3-on-3 play this season. There are argument to be made that his assists were secondary and that they were a dint of his sheer volume of play, and that his ice time actually wore him down and reduced his ability to be effective in the late stages of the game. However, it can also be argued that his play on the 5-on-5 was so good that he alone shut down enough attacks and odd-man rushes, helping Minnesota to hold onto leads in the third period with such effective success this season. There's absolutely a debate to be had about his true level of effectiveness and leadership, but few can deny that his numbers on 5-on-5 were some of the best in the league. Sadly, outside of Jared Spurgeon, the defense saw minimal improvements in players Nate Prosser and Jonas Brodin, and saw regressions from the likes of Matt Dumba and Marco Scandella. Numbers and the eye test show players that failed to deliver on the hopes of GM Chuck Fletcher - and their own stagnant growth in the mental aspects of the game is a cause for serious concern going forward. Whether it's coaching or the players themselves, a focus on developing situational awareness and defensive positioning are an absolute must for the defensive core going into next season. Free Agency It's no secret that Minnesota is up against the wall a bit on the salary cap going into the 2016- 17 season. The fear may have subsided a bit as players that looked to get big raises in order to be retained such as Matt Dumba and Jason Zucker and not in a position to ask for much after their recent performance last season. The downside to their bad season is that now, the question of their potential shifts from "when" to "if" they will improve enough to justify signing them long-term. GM Fletcher has some hard choices to make, and much of it relies upon the coach he decides to move into the position full-time. Look to see larger moves being made in this off-season compared to the last off-season, and if none are to be found, look for GM Fletcher to be moved at the end of yet another season of inconsistent play.

I hope this is the right subreddit for my concerns. I have been dealing with a variety of ups and downs with my mental health my entire life, but this past year I've mostly been down. I've always been in a state of anxiety and worry, and nowadays I feel like I don't have a grip on reality or who I am as a person, and can't seem to make sense of wtf is going in my brain and identify what I'm experiencing. I'm bored most of the time. And can't seem to do anything about it. I get little enjoyment from my usual hobbies like video games and art lately, and when I DO feel like starting them up, I can't seem to complete anything and retain my focus. I go through a cycle of interests, restart the same games over and over (I've created a new farm in SD Valley possibly 10 times in the past year) pick up new hobbies with vigor then dump them a week later once they no longer have a "new" feeling. Lately, I've been self-medicating with weed to just get some enjoyment from food or to be able to have fun while watching a movie. I cannot play games longer than 30 minutes unless my SO gives me their ADHD meds. I have very poor interpersonal relationships and no support group. I have a very close relationship with my SO of 5 years, but he also has been dealing with major depressive disorder, anxiety, adhd, and has a possible diagnosis of ASD for most of our relationship, and so isn't the greatest at emotional support. Despite this, I have zero desire for any extra friendship or companionship. I like being alone. I do like people, but just like my hobbies, any relationships I make begin to bore me easily as well. I also think I have some type of sensory issues, being present in class and focusing on learning the subject matter has been incredibly distressing, I get easily distracted and lose my train of thought when anyone coughs/makes a comment/I smell something different/loud noises/laughter/etc. I always feel completely over-loaded by stimuli when I'm not in my "safe" environment (home or in a massage session. Most of the downward spiral seems to have begun when I went through a lifestyle change from working in food service/management for 4 years to attending massage therapy school. I was miserable at my old job, but in a different way. While I still struggled with the boredom/lack of interest in hobbies, anxiety, and depressive-like ups and downs in mood, I still found enjoyment in social activities, and didn't have so many issues with self-esteem and feeling "lost" with my identity. I was mostly just stressed and mentally exhausted all the time, but was pushing through. Now, I can't seem to handle even sitting in a class for 4 hours most days without wanting to run out the door. I have never seen a therapist/psychologist. I'm awful at being emotionally vulnerable, and so have never fully talked about these issues with anyone. Now I'm wondering, where do I start tackling this? I don't know if I should start seeing a therapist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, what? I don't know if I want a diagnosis, or if I just need to let this shit out to make better sense of what's going on in my head and help me to ground myself in reality. I am afraid. I am okay with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety or even ASD. But what if I'm bi-polar or have borderline personality disorder or a dissociative disorder or am just a straight narcissist... What if I can't open up properly and explain my feelings concisely. Would online counseling be better to start with? What if I can't afford my appointments... My biggest fear is that there's nothing wrong with me. That I'm just "going through stuff. I apologize in advance for the very long story, and my heartfelt thanks in advance for those who take the time to read it. I am a long time lurker but this is my first time posting more than a few sentences to Reddit so my apologies for any formatting mistakes. TLDR: LDR BF had two opportunities in as many years to move in with me, both times he got cold feet. Now we can't be together for at least another year, coupled with lingering intimacy issues that have left me angry and bitter. How do I move forward, and should I? I met him about three years ago, quite by accident through mutual friends online. We quickly hit it off and began spending more and more time together. I was interested in him from the very start, and it seemed to be reciprocated - in fact, he was the driving force early on in getting us to spend more time together and play games, watch movies, hang out in voice calls, etc. After a few months of extreme interest, things cooled and we drifted apart, much to my disappointment, but then we came back together. He had just gotten out of another relationship and was going through a difficult time in his life, and it was over a year until the "I love yous" finally slipped out and officially started a relationship, and we've been spending as much time as we can together ever since. I was completely smitten with him - his personality, his kindness, the way he can make me laugh about anything, and a million other tiny and big things that make me certain that I would be perfectly happy being together. During our time in a long distance relationship, we have been in a voice call almost continuously - we both work, but anytime we're both at home, we're on a call. When not, we keep in close contact through text. He's halfway across the continent, but we made it work. The rest of this is going to start sounding really negative, so I want to stress this part up front - he is incredibly easy to get along with, we have a perfectly matched sense of humor, we share the same views on just about everything, we share similiar goals in life, and generally we have a great, drama-free relationship. We're the couple that other friends are always jealous of because we seem to work so well together. He has a lot of great points and I don't want to sound like it's all bad, because it's not. There's a lot of good. In fact, a couple Christmases ago, I had written him a letter with 100 of the things about him that I loved. I had to start trimming down the list at the end to fit just 100. He came out and visited me for two weeks last summer. It was our first time meeting in real life at that point. He was just the same as he was during our long distance interactions, and we had a wonderful time together, except for intimacy. He showed little to no signs of being attracted to me or interested in me. I made it very clear before hand that as he was my guest, I was not going to be initiating anything or making any moves on him as I wanted him to be completely comfortable and let him set the pace. I certainly wasn't expecting sex on the first night or at all, even - but what surprised me was the complete lack of any of the usual signs of physical attraction. It felt like having a roommate, not a boyfriend. The most intimate that we were at the time was a brief kiss. Earlier in the day he had beckoned me over to kiss him, but we were with my parents at the time and it would not have been appropriate so I had to turn him down as discreetly as I could. When we were alone again that night, he brought it up jokingly as if it were evidence that I was the one who wasn't interested in any type of intimacy - so I turned and kissed him, which surprised him but he seemed to enjoy it. Other than holding hands during a walk, that was the full extent of our physical intimacy during a two-week time period. While he was here, when I asked him about it near the end of his stay, he had suddenly cooled on the idea, stating that he didn't want to put anything in motion at the time and he wasn't sure yet. A couple weeks after he had returned home, I asked him if he was still interested in moving in. He danced around the question, and finally say said that he wanted to finish his last semester of classes before moving, which is not what he had previously said. He is a part-time student, and we had previously discussed this many times, and he had been the one to suggest that he could simply transfer his credits here - we had made plans to visit the campus while he was visiting, but he did not want to when he was here. It felt like an excuse to delay. During the conversation, I brought up my concerns as gently as I could, specifically the lack of apparent physical attraction. I mentioned that it felt like he isn't ready for a real relationship yet. He didn't correct me. After an uncomfortably long silence, I told him that there wasn't any pressure and not to worry about it, that I would still be here when he was. And so, things continued as they had been for the next few months until earlier this year. He completed his last semester of class (with quite a bit of help from me; I did most of his homework and wrote his paper for him because he was having difficulty working part time while taking the class. But I've been annoyed that he never bothered to pick up his diploma or fill out the paperwork to officially graduate. It makes it feel even more like it was just a cop- out to put off moving. Earlier this year, his dog of 11 years unexpectedly passed away, whom we has incredibly close to. He was devastated. After a few days he began to pull himself together, and it seemed to act as a catalyst - suddenly he had decided that he wanted to move out here this year, and began planning another visit out to make sure he could transfer his work or find alternative work before hand. He planned on visiting for two weeks in June and then moving in September. I've been supportive of his choices at every step along the way - making sure that he never felt pressured, and letting him be the driver of all of his decisions, but offering to assist him in every way that I could, because I would very much like him to be here and live with me. When he got here, it was almost the same as the last time. He spent two weeks stressing over minor details instead of actually getting things in place so that he could move. For example, he spent a day upset thinking that he wouldn't be able to get to work during the winter - which isn't an issue for most here, but after hearing one story of a couple foot snowstorm he was sent into a panic that he wouldn't be able to get to work and they'd immediately fire him. Or on what exact day that he would be able to go to the local Wal-Mart to confirm his transfer. Or concerned that they would yank his transfer at the last minute, despite both of us confirming it multiple times that they couldn't. Or worrying that he wouldn't be able to take care of his mother if he moved - his mother knew about his plans and was actively encouraging him to persue them if he wished, telling him not to worry about her. I tried my best to address each of these as he brought them up, but he either shut down and insisted that it was an insurmountable issue, or found ten more to fill their place. I know that he has anxiety about making big decisions, but it seemed like nothing I did was enough. I currently live with my parents for convenience and to help them with their mini-farm as needed, and we have a wonderful relationship. I live independently in the upper floor. I work from home as programmer and helped them purchase and remodel this house. They have been very supportive of my 'friend' helping pick him up from bus stop / the airport, doing their best to show him around town, taking him out to dinner and cooking homemade meals that he requests, and trying to give him as many opportunities as he can while he was here with us. Initially, they had offered to let him stay here rent-free until he found an apartment if he wanted to move out here. They went out of their way to help him find other, potentially better jobs, drive him to interviews, and were generally as supportive of him as they possibly could be. They did this both times that he came out to visit. They even went so far as to spend quite a bit of time and money to create a guest room for him to stay in, giving up our reading area and turning it into a very comfortable suite, and my mother was seriously considering purchasing a pre-built wooden house to put on the property, insulate, and run electrical to it should he stay with us long term. And BF refused to take advantage of almost any of the opportunities that they provided for him. All he wanted to do was stay in my office and play video games with me. Every single day, I tried to encourage him to go outside and either take advantage of those opportunities, or at least go and do things together like walk around town, go hiking, etc. Out of two weeks, we spent only one day outside walking around town. The rest were spent indoors, minus a couple times my parents asked for our help with yard work or to get groceries. His reason was always that he had already seen enough of the area the last summer he was here. BF has been extremely negative about my parents, saying that they're 'way too intense' and that he doesn't get along with them at all. He was extremely negative about wanting to help around the house - I cooked and cleaned all of our meals, minus twice that he helped with part of the dishes, citing that he was 'on vacation and just wanted to relax. One day, my parents requested that we help with some yard work - he was extremely reluctant to do so and while he was polite about it to their face, he was petulent about it to me in private, upset because he 'just wanted to relax. I told him that this would essentially be his rent if he chose to stay with us, spending a few hours a week assisting with whatever chores had to be done. He didn't seem to take it seriously and complained that it wouldn't be fair to do too much work because he works a physical job. He spent the entire time trying to decide if he actually wanted to move or not - I told him, at every step along the way, that I couldn't make that decision for him and that while I would love more than anything for him to be here with me, he had to make that decision himself. He seemed to flip-flop on whether he was staying or moving on a daily basis. The last day that he was here, he finally decided, for sure, that he wanted to move out here. But by then, he had upset my parents with his continual lack of motivation and lack of desire to do anything other than sit and play video games that they politely amended their original offer for him to stay here with us. Privately, they came to me with their concerns about his lack of motivation, and I couldn't exactly offer much evidence against this. They are only willing to let him stay here for 2-3 months now and if he would be able to afford his own apartment at the end of that period of time, as they were very concerned that we might end up being responsible for him should an unexpected expense or accident come up, or should he lose his job, etc. During this time, there was very little to no intimacy - we briefly kissed a couple of times. Very long story short, I tried everything that I could think of to try to get him interested in any sort of physical intimacy. The most success that I had was getting him to sit and look at porn together. I began to give him a handjob at one point, which he allowed for about thirty seconds before making up an excuse to leave the room. Over the next few days, I very gently tried to do the same again, but he refused my advances. I later asked him directly if he even found me attractive at all - he spent several minutes beating around the question and it sounded to me like he was trying to convince himself in real time of the answer being yes and then working backwards to come up with reasons to justify it. These issues are exacerbated because he has moderate to severe depression. I've known this since very early on and have supported him through it as best as I can, and while I understand that low libido is a common side effect of depression (as well as the prescription antidepressants he was on for some time two years ago) in addition to being out of shape, but it is difficult for me because I have an extremely high libido and I know that he used to be much, much more interested in sex in his prior relationships. Something that still sticks with me is when we were talking about his difficulties with sex and he told me that he had been really, really interested in having sex with an ex, who then told him that 'sex isn't all that great, it's just like masturbation' which he said killed most of his interest in it. He has told me before that physical intimacy isn't important to him, and that what is important to him is knowing that I'm there for him. He said that he would be happy to continue a long distance relationship for as long as it took, saying that he knows people who have done so for ten years or more. I told him that that would not work for me. I am heartbroken that he got cold feet again and that he did the same thing as he did last summer. I talked with him about this after he returned, and he apologized profusely, saying that he was sorry for disappointing me again. He's been making plans to move out here into his own apartment next year, and has been extra-flirty and attentitve, and generally has been trying to put as much effort as he can into the relationship. But I can't shake the feeling that it's too little, too late. He also asked if I wanted to take a break from the relationship. I told him that I didn't know yet, because I don't. I'm torn. He told me before that an ex broke up with him for similar reasons - his ex offered for him to move in with him, he refused, ex was upset and didn't talk to him for a few months, ending the relationship. I don't know if he's serious about his plans for next year. I don't want to go through another year of waiting to be rewarded with two weeks of disappointment. I still care about him and I don't want to encourage him to move if I'm not sure about our relationship. And I hate feeling like I'm not attractive enough for him or not good enough (which feels extra-humiliating for me because I've spent a huge amount of time and effort in eating well and strength training, and the results definitely show. Even if he is completely serious and things will be fantastic from this point onwards, I'm still angry and upset with him about what happened this summer. I feel terrible that I feel this way, since it seems unfair that I'm the one asking him to uproot his life (regardless of the fact that it would be far more beneficial for him to move here than vice versa) and I feel like the stereotypical 'guy who's only interested in sex. But, it's a death by a thousand cuts - there have been so many times over the years that he's done something to disappoint me that I feel like all of the love and attraction that I had at the start has run out, and all of the effort that I invested into the relationship has been like trying to squeeze blood from a stone. I don't know how to move past it because just talking to him on the phone brings those feelings of anger and disappointment back again, and no amount of "I'm sorry"s helps that feeling. And it makes me feel worse because I know that he's trying and I logically shouldn't still be holding it against him. Compounding matters one more time is that I currently have almost all of my financial resources tied up in a new business endeavor, which is also sapping most of my time and energy. I can't assist him financially to move out here sooner, and without my parents' blessing for him to stay with us, he would be just barely scraping by month-to-month. If I talked with my parents frankly about all of this, I could probably convince them to give him a chance, but after all of this I can't bring myself to do it. I feel like I've spent the last few years being his emotional sponge and all-around problem-solver and that he's been giving back the bare minimum to hold my interest. It's probably unfair to say that and almost certainly unintentional on his part, but it's how I feel. I keep circling back to the fact that he's got what he wants once more - an LDR in which I'm his emotional support and in which he doesn't have to make any big changes on his end or be physically intimate. And since he is planning on buying a (n extremely expensive) puppy as soon as he can afford it, I can't help but feel like my needs are taking a back seat. Prior to his most recent visit, I suggested several times that he wait on reserving a puppy until after he'd moved, but he keep assuring me that he'd calculated out all of his expenses and knew he could move in September and did so regardless. So he put 500 down on a 4, 500 puppy right before he left. Considering that that's a month's rent right there, I keep imagining him him choosing the puppy over moving to be with me. I am a huge dog lover and understand his loss and need to fill the hole that his dog's passing has left in his heart, but I feel hurt that his priorities seem to rank me below it. All I can keep thinking about is what I would do if the situations were reversed, and I'm just left with sadness. I would have leapt at every change we gave him. I feel like I've tried as hard as I can to be there for him for anything at all that he's ever needed, but that it simply wasn't enough for him to reciprocate. It hurt having him sit next to me playing games, because he felt farther away from me there than he ever did when he was 2, 000 miles away. I've been depressed and bitter the past two weeks and burying myself in work and outside activities to try to get some space between us so I can figure out what I want to do next. I know that I'm pushing him away, but it's either that or unload all of this onto him again and make him feel like complete shit, which wouldn't accomplish anything but make me feel even worse because I care about him and want him to be happy. How can I resolve my feelings of anger and resentment towards him? Should I continue with the LDR and see what the next summer brings? If I choose not to, how can I possibly let him down without making a completely selfish ass of myself and sending his depression into another downward spiral.

Never have the trenches of World War One been so tidy. never have the ruined walls and arches that surround them been so picturesquely arranged. never have the fingernails of the soldiers been so clean, their teeth so straight and white, their hair so artfully mussed. Even the rats looked like extras who had wandered in from a live action remake of Ratatouille. Did the filmmakers not see Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old? About fifteen minutes in my wife and I knew with a certainty that one of the handsome chaps would not go the distance, and once the remaining handsome chap was on his own we knew with an even greater certainty that he would meet a cowering French peasant girl in a barn or cellar, and that she would be clutching an infant while shells exploded overhead, and sure enough, about forty minutes later, there she was, fresh from having her tumbling golden curls blown out at a good salon. We relished the interiors of the buildings in the ruined town, where patches of brick showed through the plaster walls with all the gritty realism of the decor of a 1950's Italian restaurant in Newark. And to yank us out of the movie right when we might have been giving over to it in spite of ourselves, cameos by Patrick Melrose and Robb Stark! Gorgeous technical work by Roger Deakins and team gets this a couple of stars. On Oscar night that will be the wife and me me rolling my eyes when this wins best picture.

I have a lot of hesitation about films that try the "one long take" thing. Often it comes across as a gimmick that doesn't do anything for the story. And they usually suffer from poor pacing as the characters have to spend half their time just walking from place to place. But this film really pulls it off well. It's briskly paced, and very exciting. The central performances are all really solid. And the production design and cinematography are outstanding. It a gorgeous movie to look at, and well worth experiencing on a big screen.
